"Holy Tongue are a trio composed of Valentina Magaletti, Susumu Mukai, and Al Wootton. Accomplished musicians in their own right, they create expansive rhythmic music that moves freely through dub, trance, post-punk, free improvisation and cinematic psychedelia. Such a dynamic energy and force is mapped across a trilogy of critically acclaimed EPs, their debut album Deliverance and Spiritual Warfare and their collaborative album with dub-pioneer Shackleton.

The trio recorded a series of improvisations in the Swiss Alps and London. Built on the foundation of vintage drum machines and instinctive interplay they created compositions where no stylistic borders apply. The record melts and the musicians’ instruments synergise, with a rawness added with featured vocals from collaborator and experimental vocalist Dali de Saint Paul on two tracks.

The record is out via AD 93 on the 9th October.

Dub techniques meet ritual percussion, hypnotic pulse and vast Popol Vuh-esque landscapes. Drawing equally from popular music, experimental traditions and spontaneous interaction, the trio treats playing, recording, editing and transformation as part of the same creative act. Sounds emerge, dissolve and reappear in new forms, creating a music that is both deeply physical and endlessly open.
With no fixed boundaries and no allegiance to genre, their work embraces movement, texture and collective energy. The result is immersive, transportive music that shifts between meditation and propulsion, intimacy and scale, always evolving in the moment."

Ever since I heard him at Mr. Bean's Music Club, and revisited records that started appearing around 2018, it felt clear that there was a particular sensitivity behind the music - curious, rhythmic, spacious, unpredictable. As well as exhibiting scores of the Methods at the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eQuadriennale in Rome in 1973, Chiari performed and filmed them in \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003egalleries and festivals throughout the 1970s.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e In the early 1960s, Chiari still had no contact with the visual \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eart world. He started composing independently in the 1950s, outside \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ethe academic circles of the well-known Schola Fiorentina. Later he \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ecame into contact with the work of John Cage and the world of \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003einternational musical experimentation through his friendship with \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eSylvano Bussotti and Pietro Grossi. In addition to his compositional \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eactivity, Bussotti was active as a pianist and performed works of new \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003emusic both in Italy and abroad. Grossi, a renowned cellist who later \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ebecame well-known for his pioneering work in the field of computer \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003emusic, organised contemporary music concerts with the association Vita \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eMusicale Contemporanea, an activity that was virtually unparalleled in \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eItaly at the time.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e After completing Intervalli (1950-56), an extended work for piano \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ethat explores combinatorial forms of composition, Chiari abandoned \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etraditional music notation and embraced a highly distinctive form of \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewriting combining graphic and verbal elements that was to become \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003echaracteristic of his later work. This new form of notation reflected \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ea shift in Chiari’s research, which now focused on gestural strategies \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eapplied to sound production using both musical instruments and \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eextra-musical objects. In composing the Methods for playing, Chiari \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eassociates the spontaneous expression and liberating effect of the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003egestures with logical, scientific and systemic procedures, no doubt \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003einformed by his earlier mathematical studies.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e The notation of the Methods is extremely detailed, precise and \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003edesigned to meticulously explore all possible nuances of every single \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003egesture. From the study of every type of breaking different materials \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewith different tools to the possible angles of one’s arm on a \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ekeyboard; from the size of water droplets falling on different \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003esurfaces to the various oscillations of stones, everything is \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003edescribed with meticulous precision. The goal is to bring the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eperformer into a state of intense concentration on the action and the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003esound it produces. Through his Methods, Chiari redefines the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003erelationship between body and instrument\/object, creating a shift away \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003efrom “knowing how to play”, in favour of the rediscovery of an \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eintimate dimension of music-making that also redefines the way a piece \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eof music is performed.
