"Ofir Ganonがかつて生演奏の純粋主義者であったことは、これまで彼の聴衆が集合的な熱狂の記憶に縛られてきたことを意味する。2004年にニューヨークへ移住して以来、
彼はこの形式への共有された崇敬を核としたコミュニティを築き、アルト・リンジー、ディアフーフのグレッグ・ソーニエ、ヤンカ・ナベイらと協働しながら、フリー・インプロヴィゼーション・グループからソロ作品までジャンルを超えたプロジェクトを創造してきた。20年にわたり着実にライブ観客の前で演奏し、制作や演奏を通じて仲間のプロジェクトを支えてきたGanonは、新作ソロ作品『Same Air』において、聴き手と演奏者の間にスタジオが作り出す障壁を超越する催眠的な組曲を通じて、その臨場感を伝える方法を見出した。

Ganonの音楽スタイルの起源は、彼の最初の音楽的記憶に遡る。それは、彼の村に住むユダヤ系モロッコ人農民たちが歌う祈りの旋律であり、彼らの呼びかけと応答による礼拝は、刻々と変化する環境の中で神へと至る道であった。信仰と不屈の精神で結ばれた共同体の物語を紡ぐ旋律のカノンが奏でる天上の調和は、Ganonに音楽の即興性という魔法を教えてくれた。この音楽とその可能性への本質的な理解が、各トラックから波打つように滲み出ている。瞑想的な序章「Ehmoon」は聴き手を手を取って導き、Ganonの視点へと誘う。曲は挑発的な反復で幕を閉じ、探求における遊び心を真摯に受け止める旅の残りを満喫する準備を整える。これにはジャンルや媒体を超えた影響力の活用も含まれる。映画音楽への敬意は「Preston, Olympic」に顕著で、彼は北アフリカと中東の影響を巧みに融合させつつ、モリコーネ風の歪んだ響きを絶妙に組み合わせている。

"Ofir Ganon’s former identity as live music purist has meant that up to this point his audience has been constrained to the memories of their ambient, collective effervescence. Since moving to New York City in 2004, he has created a community around shared reverence for the form, collaborating with the likes of Arto Lindsay, Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, and Janka Nabay to name a few, all while creating genre-spanning projects from free improv groups to solo compositions. After twenty years of steadily playing for live audiences and supporting his peers’ projects through production or performance, Ganon has found how to impart the in-person on his new solo effort Same Air, a hypnotic suite that transcends the studio shaped barrier between listener and performer.

The origin of Ganon’s style comes from his first memories of music: the prayer tunes sung by Jewish-Moroccan farmers in his village whose call-and-response worship was their pathway to divinity in an ever-changing environment. The celestial harmony of a melodic canon carrying on the story of a community defined by its devotion and resilience exposed Ganon to the magic of musical spontaneity. This intrinsic appreciation for music and its possibilities undulates out of each track, starting off with “Ehmoon”, a meditative preface that takes listeners by the hand, guiding them to Ganon’s vantage point. The song closes with taunting refluence that prepares us to bask in the rest of the journey which takes seriously the play in exploration. This includes tapping into influences outside of the genre and medium. His regard for film scores manifests in “Preston/Olympic" where he deftly couples off-kilter Morriconian twang with his North African and Middle Eastern influences.

Ganon’s instrumental phrasing evokes emotions difficult to articulate but universally endured. Never luxuriating in expression for too long (each track is two to three minutes), he has crafted pieces that are confident in their wandering. Eventually he defiantly strides into the final crescendo of “Neilah”, which along with “Miel” he transcribed, arranged, and reimagined from the same Jewish-Moroccan Yom Kippur prayer tunes he heard as a child. Percussion on both tracks courtesy of Cem Misiroglu helps to immerse listeners in the catharsis of atonement translated into a multi-instrumental, universal thrumming punctuated by the cymbal’s dry responses.

Same Air represents a portrait of a musician whose life is enriched by the world he is walking through, not allowing his métier to become blinders. Each listener, an audience member in their own right – at their own pace and in their own space – is led to the less obvious corners of his cumulative truth, the collective destination, by the siren song of hypnagogic folk. The album’s transportive quality is well worth the time Ganon took to immortalize his music."
