After deciding to return to Oakland to be closer to friends and her music community, the album was eventually recorded at Littlefield Concert Hall. Former Mills technical director and friend Brendan Glasson engineered several sessions between 2022-23, capturing what would become My Inner Rest in a cathartic close to both Marela's time at Mills College, and the institution itself. The unexpected gestation period gave Marela deeper insight into the power of her creative endeavor, and crystallized the need to perform the material live. Each piece was ultimately recorded on stage, wearing a wireless headset mic and no headphones, as the singer was immersed with her sounds amplified in the room. Some songs took as many as 30 takes in order to capture her ideal performance. Many artists go through phases of their life where they become disconnected to their identity as an artist and their own work. With Brad’s residency taking place during the dead of winter, a vast emptiness pervaded his experience and creeped into his creative process in surprisingly\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e beneficial ways.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEquipped with only three changes of clothes, his laptop, an e-pipa, delay pedal, and field recorder upon his arrival, Brad was given access to the residency’s recording studio, two practice rooms, a mixing console, and clearance to use some of the studio’s more expensive gear. While this setup allowed him to unlock new sonic possibilities, the sobering solitude that defined his stay also ushered new tones into his music.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBrad shares: “I had vast amounts of time to think, especially while on freezing walks in the evening post-recording. These walks had a significant impact on the music I was producing. Everything from that space had a desolate air and nocturnal hue. After five days, I returned to Beijing with a hard drive full of files. I put the project aside and would only work on it in the ensuing years when that feeling of nothingness surfaced again.
