"Être Ensemble—an homage to the DIY space Être and a farewell performance there with an improvised band before its closing in 2019—is an umbrella project of Joni Void, an abstracted form/hybrid of collaboration, recordings, remixing, sampling, improvisation, sound editing, etc; essentially, output that sources improvised/jam recordings with friends and/or their own material reshaped into new narratives combined with Joni Void's own processed samples and cinematic atmospheres.
The first half, CLOSE, was originally released via our digital imprint A Red Thread in October 2021. It is a remix/companion of I - L by Madeline Johnston as Mercury Tracer, a collection of electric piano miniatures that was released on tape with Jean’s label Everyday Ago in May that same year.
The second half, SPACE, is a more recent offering that is based around/samples all (at the time) 6 releases by the Japanese tape label Babera Records, run by Nozomu Hirano. In February 2022, Babera released Joni Void’s Nostalgie d'une Porte Ouverte and Jean was gifted the Babera back catalog, inspiring the remix/sourcing idea for this second EP.
CLOSE is about a possessed person, and SPACE is a haunted place. The Joni Void soundtrack to a non-existent surrealist horror film"
