Edition of 100.

Description by Full Spectrum Records:

"Full Spectrum Records is pleased to present the latest solo work from Nathan McLaughlin, the elegiac Stoner Lake in G. This is somehow Nathan’s first release for us, following on from a pair of pastoral collaborations with long-time label staple Seth Chrisman, 2018’s Earth Tones at the Metal Show and 2015’s Olivebridge.

Recorded by Nathan at Stoner Lake and Hudson, New York, this collection of quietly understated synthesizer miniatures eschews the tape loop driven working methods with which he has become synonymous. His trademark reel-to-reel machines were left on the shelf, with favor given to his largely homemade selection of modular noise makers. In a way, this renders Stoner Lake in G as more of a spiritual successor to Nathan’s 2012 release for Senufo Editions, The Refrigerator is Emotional, digging deep into Nathan’s creative roots as a synthesist.

In his words, “tape was here 40 years ago when I was born and will be here tomorrow, plenty of others are doing that [sort of work] so they can carry that torch now.”

Intended as a meditation on past experience, future potential, and the possible lives that could have been but thankfully did not come to pass, Stoner Lake in G acknowledges the heavy burden that nostalgia inflicts upon all of us – an accounting, of sorts, for the ghosts of the past. It is fitting that this work takes much of its core inspiration from the lyrics to Neil Peart’s lyrics from “Time Stand Still” – “I’m not looking back, but I want to look around me now.”

Taken in this context, Stoner Lake in G stands as an evolutionary hurdle in Nathan’s creative process and a setting of the stage for a new generation of growth in sound. We are honored to provide a home for this work in our ever-expanding catalog of noises, buzzings, and hums.
