Known as one of the most dedicated contemporary investigators of \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ethe potential of analogue synthesizers, the musicality and personal \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etouch of Papiro’s work stand apart from a field dominated by gear \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003efetishism and nostalgia. In recent years, one of the unique \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eingredients of Papiro’s music has been his use of synthesised human \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003evoices, often lending his productions a dimension of uncanniness. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eHere, he pushes this aspect of his work much further, presenting a \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003esuite of four pieces where most listeners would be hard pressed to \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etrace the sounds they hear back to electronic sources.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e The opening title piece, “Con un occhio aperto” (i.e. “With One \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eEye Open”), begins with metallic textures, similar to bowed cymbals or \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003egongs, which are soon joined by waves of percussive sound, both \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003edrum-like and metallic. Irregularly rising to the surface and receding \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003einto the background, at times reminiscent of natural rhythms of rain, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ewind, or sea, these percussive textures are accompanied by haunting \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003evoice-like tones, at once strikingly realistic and disorienting in \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003etheir non-human patterns of articulation and attack. Like the voices, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ethe percussive sounds can at times be almost indistinguishable from \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003ereal cowbells, gongs, or hand drums, precisely mimicking their attack, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003edecay, resonance, and spatial diffusion. Perhaps the \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003eclosest parallel to these overlapping waves of rattling, pulsating \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003epercussive sounds and eerie extended tones is Jon Gibson’s classic \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Visitations”, where the line between instrumental, electronic, and \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cem\u003enatural sound is blurred in a mesmerising drift.
