Text excerpt from the label:
"Freddy Ruppert presents ‘It’s in the Rafters Now’ on Brachliegen Tapes, a dense auto-biographical sequence of 11 scenes that explore the mutability of grief memory through viscous texture driven ambience, raw techno-noise convulsions, and fragmented storytelling. Montaging eldritch FM synthesis, pulped gore, horror adjacent suspense and scratching hexapoda noise, ‘It’s in the Rafters Now’ tears the past from the cerebrum and splices it back together as a distorted reminiscence. Highly recommened if you’re into Mark Templeton, Angelo Harmsworth, Jake Muir, Puce Mary’s The Drought, and the films of Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, John Carpenter and Jess Franco.
Employing a similar faux cinematic narrative approach as recent releases ‘i dreamt we lost everything’ and ‘the inner room’ — and drawing on the themes of grief, loss, and parental death that were at the crux of previous releases on NNA Tapes and the cult This Song Is a Mess but So Am I project — Ruppert reflects on the shifting nature of memory across 11 warped scenes. Reflecting on his artistic process, Ruppert explains:
“All the music I've ever made, while sounding vastly different, is always about the same things: the exploration of memory, unreliable memory, and how grief shapes and re-shapes memory in profound, unreliable, and overwhelming ways”
Faded VHS tracking echoes and degraded family photographs warp spools of memory throughout, as heavily saturated pulses and stabs of dissonance interrupt total recall. Melodic tenderness competes for space amongst the harsher intrusions of time as Ruppert wrestles against himself — the unreliable narrator — to make sense of the fragmented flashes of memory. Tension remains throughout, as the binary between positive/negative memory is demonstrated to be permeable and ever-shifting, mediated by the fugue of temporal flow"
