Leaving behind strumming, he began playing fingerstyle guitar. Coming from the old European continent, Raoul Eden has singular influences, which he puts down to the crossroad position of his roots – between the eastern and western world, north and south. Arabic music has always been present around him; he is fond of Gnawa music and plays guembri (a Gnawa bass lute also known as a sintir, gimbri or hejhouj) in his spare time.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eHe has also modified his Guild D55 with an extra fret that allows him to play microtonal embellishments like in Tuareg blues or Turkish saz. We're very happy to have discovered his music this last year. His playing is very punctuated and feels like he absorbed the best lessons from Jack Rose's thumb technique. We took our freedom for granted and lived like brothers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLike me, like everyone, Scott has crossed a lot of rivers since those days: A move to San Francisco, followed by a years-long sojourn on the East Coast. Marriage. A daughter. Work. Miles and miles of music. And finally, for him, a return to Ojai, California, 50 miles from where he and I sat staring out over the cemetery in the rain, wondering whether we could teach our hands to play the way our minds wanted them to. Listening to Lost Time Behind the Moon—and there is such bittersweetness to this—I can’t help but hear what time has made of the questions that we pressed on each other when we were just kids on Hope Avenue: What is life without a little regret? Is there a way to look in that old cracked mirror and feel as hopeful as we do haunted? Lost Time Behind the Moon doesn’t answer any of these; in fact, it poses more—and harder—questions. But they’re softened and wizened by the years that Scott has spent playing music for himself alone, trying to discover some kind of truth that works for him. And in this solitude, he’s created something that feels wide and inclusive and loving and forgiving. The very notion of a “solo” album, and its associated emancipatory baggage, is a specious designation in this case, since music this quietly assured, this effortlessly unfolding, does not bloom in isolation or solipsism. Although Blue Rider Songs articulates Hirsch’s singular aesthetic (more on that soon) more lucidly and forthrightly\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e than any other album on which he has worked, it is also, like most good music, the alloyed fruit of long hours, and long travels, with other writers and players, and with other records, and books, and films.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd indeed, these recordings feature notable, and notably subtle, contributions from Jade Hendrix (harmony vocals); Thomas Heyman (pedal steel), Hirsch’s old bandmate in the San Francisco group the Court and Spark; and HGM stalwarts Phil Cook (organ and harmonica) and Matt Douglas (saxophones), among others. But as a primarily single-artist vision and statement, it does speak to the way that back roads, detours away from or around one’s other, more high-profile creative pursuits, can lead lead to unexpected destinations arguably more compelling than anything the highways could provide. Sometimes, as William Least Heat-Moon demonstrates in Blue Highways, his classic travelogue of rural America (an admitted influence on this album), you have to leave the main roads to understand their contours and their worth. And as in “Sundown Highway,” that can be a slow, and heavy, journey; you might, like Lowell George, require “weed, whites, and wine.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBlue Rider Songs emerged from various personal contexts: a year of near-constant touring with Hiss Golden Messenger in 2015; a move with his family from Brooklyn to Ojai, California, and the launch of his new Echo Magic West studio there; and above all, the process of making the self-titled Golden Gunn album with longtime musical partner M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger and their mutual friend Steve Gunn. Hirsch wrote much of the music on that album, and watching Taylor and Gunn set words and vocals to his instrumental productions proved the necessary catalyst to take his writing and recording into fresh territory under his own name. As an engineer and producer, Hirsch has always excelled as a colorist, and it’s satisfying to hear how his characteristic palette—an unlikely, humid nexus of J.J. Cale’s narcotic, head-nodding guitar boogie, Waylon Jennings’ honky stomp, and Scientist’s pristine, formalist dub textures—complements his own compositions on Blue Rider Songs. This is a languid, future blues unbothered by authenticity scare quotes or the implementation of studio technology—it lives “outside of time,” like the protagonist of “Loss of Forgetfulness.” (The same song’s line about “the work of some machines” is apt, as is the ambiguous reference—perhaps—to sci-fi prophet’s Philip K. Pairing fingerpicked guitar and violin, the tape has the feeling of a fireside village collaboration — seasoned artists playing off one another to settle the dust of the day, and perhaps dig out something new from each other in the process. Noyes’ playing is measured and understated. Like Nathan Bowles, who also evokes a sort of Appalachian, colonial American style, Noyes doesn’t trade in flash, but rather in a hypnotic low ramble that serves as an elixir for anxiety.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMoss’ violin is played more as a fiddle than a classical conduit over most of this album. It has a dust in the strings that’s wiser than its years, as if the instrument were passed from family player to family player, picking up a calloused instinct that radiates no matter who’s at the bow. There are certainly moments when the pair hit on something more avant sliced, “Suburban Potions” for example, and “Stairway to the Stars” hits a slightly frantic pitch, breaking their nocturnal spell for just a few minutes.
