In their questing, Olive and Yan Jun - the former on magnetic pickups, both on electronics - seem determined to draw down on or sharpen some ineffable sensation, like amateur radio enthusiasts straining to lock onto a pirate radio signal halfway around the world. Yan’s electronics meld effortlessly with Olive’s setup and Olive reminisces that “We recorded for two afternoons and got quite a bit of music… While going through the recordings, it occurred to me that two of the pieces might work well together. They were similar in length, so I basically laid them on top of each other, did some very minimal mixing and that was it. The textures are very clear, very open, so they work well together, and I love the inadvertent/unplanned consonances and dissonances and the matching and mismatching of textures.”
Listening as the 28-minute piece unfolds, a certain playfulness emerges. One can hear the two probing at the activity of sound creation, something that is certainly central to Yan’s work. But rather than a conceptual exercise in aural cataloging, the two revel at the accrual and juxtaposition of resultant sounds. Radio grabs, quicksilver scratches and scrapes, sputters and pops, flutters and quavering tone sweeps, reworked plucked and fractured melodies, hums and hiss duck in and out with nimble fluency. The variety of timbres, densities and pitch spectrum is striking right up until the final moments of low thrumming pulse, electromagnetic fuzz and the distant chime of church bells. But it is the process of weaving these together into a coruscating aggregate that ultimately stands out. Even without knowing the final mixing process, the overlapped layers which accumulate and then fray apart with variegated intensity and concentration reveal a volatile unfolding structure."

Artist : Tim Olive & Yan Jun

Label : 845 Audio

["845 audio","cd","monooto
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/br1_8d46db5d-327b-46b7-9141-c04c41010f93.jpg?v=1632101121","//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/br2_8a830c28-fb82-44ed-a6d5-73161946e2ca.jpg?v=1632101121","//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/br3.jpg?v=1632101121
//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/products/br1_8d46db5d-327b-46b7-9141-c04c41010f93.jpg?v=1632101121
Title

兵庫県神戸市の実験音楽家Tim Oliveのプライベートレーベル845 Audio諸作を一挙入荷しました。リサイクルボール紙ケースです。

レーベルその他作品はこちら /// Click here to see more 845 Audio releases available at Tobira.

-------------------------

Edition of 100.

"i'd like to say something.
but i have no words at this moment.
words are something not belong to me.
ok, the year of boar is coming.
enjoy!"
- yan jun, january 8, 2019

~

Reviews:

Raymond Cummings, The Wire:

"…Brother of DIvinity trades heavily in sine waves scrambled gently or aggressively, with samples snuck into the general surface melee: a Where’s Waldo? approach, with Waldo replaced by a crying kitten or squashed snatch of pop or re-re-regurgitated Morse code guitar. Olive is working with his trusted magnetic pickups and electronics. Individually they recorded four times ten minutes of solo pieces, which would be stuck together and mixed by Tim Olive. It is a match that works very well. In each of the four pieces, there is an excellent balance between both players and the way they use their sounds. There are moments of silence and there are moments of unrest. Maguire's synthesizers are minimal yet full of tension and attention. Separated into four segments, it begins with crackling sounds and a ratcheting undercurrent, the crackling soon giving way to the shifting pitch of oscillators; the second segment concentrates on what sounds like a human voice, though it eludes absolute identification, creating a kind of eerie aria. Some sounds establish a kind of continuous state, often a gritty drone, which gradually mutate into or are simply displaced by other sounds, while brief episodes of static and skittering bits of sonic grit establish a foreground and a keen sense of spatial structure."

Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly:

"In 2013, Olive did a recording with the well-known turntablist Martin Tétreault. Again we find Olive on the magnetic pickups. Although they have worked together before, "across three decades", this is their first release together. Music made with the use of turntables is somehow always inclined to have some rhythmic cadences to it and this is no different. The rotating surfaces, which may not necessarily be pieces of vinyl, of course, are scanned by needles and perhaps other amplified objects, to which Olive adds his own blends of electric sounds, currents being pick up from the various apparatus in use and as such, I can imagine Tétreault has something to choose from. The music ranges from 'considerably quiet' to 'pleasantly present' or even 'nice noise' and in each of the four pieces, they seem to be moving along those lines, with fine, intelligent conversation. A fine meeting this is of improvised music, electro-acoustic and musique concrete and at thirty-six minutes it seems the right length; not too much, just enough to get it right."

Mark Wharton, Idwal Fisher:

"These two releases on Tim Olive’s 845 Audio label are recent and still available via Bandcamp and hopefully in hard copy. I urge you to investigate but only if you have the time and patience. Yes, yes, yes, I know, shut up with the patience thing. We know we’re not here for a beery sing-a-long. This time around Olive collaborates with Martin Tétreault and Doreen Girard, or vice-versa if you prefer. Tétreault working with turntables and electronics and Girard on prepared tsymbaly, that's a dulcimer in case you were wondering [I was].
On Boro’s single 26-minute track this results in a wash of scraping, droning, twanging, frotting, tink and howl as Girard tugs, shoves and maybe for all I know breathes across her strings creating a crumbling world of zings and crashes. Faune [recorded in 2013] is full of skree, tiny machine sounds, throbbing drone. Loops from Tétreault’s turntables speed up and slow down, gentle knocks and rumbles and through all this Olive works his magnetic pickups, strings are pulled through guitar strings, tiny wire brushes are deployed, coils, violin bows, tuning forks maybe circuit boards from dusty PC towers were crushed between weighted palms?

On the second piece, low frequency rumbles bounce through open spaces and what sounds like clattering bottles or other rattling noises functioning as percussion. Later a semblance of rhythm is constructed via knocking noises baked in reverb that rumble through the spacious and metallic mix. From there a mass of what resembles anemic strings, massive oil drum vibrations and sustained electronic notes extend throughout. After a performance in June 2019, the duo spent a day in the studio, with Dadge’s amplified percussion, small instruments and electronics, as well as Olive’s magnetic pickup/electronics system, running through a number of guitar and bass amplifiers. Dadge’s improvised percussion gives a pseudo-rhythmic throb, punctuated with more amp noise and feedback. There is overall a loose free improvised sound here, with Dadge’s toy piano undercutting some of the more chaotic electronics throughout. The opening sounds stay consistent throughout, but overall there is a dynamic feel, with other parts swirling and slowly flowing from one moment to the next, balancing that feeling of consistency with spontaneity."

Mark Wharton, Idwal Fisher:

"'Nice You!' has two tracks, the first of which becomes one of those glorious ‘pull you under’ drones that could have at its heart a frotted drum skin or is perhaps a recording of a steel door swinging on its rusty hinges; the second is full of resonating gongs, steel pipe clank, whining scrape and a wheezing tuneless harmonica that floats in and out of proceedings.
