After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7\" released on Valentine's Day 2013. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7\" released on Valentine's Day 2013. On one side of Let It Out sits Miles Bonny, a long time musical collaborator who spent his youth soaking in powerful musical moments in NYC under the tutelage of his trumpet-slinging father, Francis Bonny, and later as a teen immersed in New York’s busy indie-hip-hop scene. As he grew up Miles cemented himself a niche in the Midwest, most notably in Lawrence, Kansas where tireless forays into beatmaking led to the founding of the much-loved INnatesounds Crew and record label, as well as a series of solo releases and collaborative projects.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eEventually shifting his focus to his own vocal stylings, it wasn’t long before Miles caught the attention of the international music community, including the young, curious ears of the at time unknown, soon-to-be future R\u0026amp;B sensation Ta-Ku. Through a series of emails and conversations, Ta-Ku asked to send Miles beats and the two planned to work on a series of tracks. On one side of Let It Out sits Miles Bonny, a long time musical collaborator who spent his youth soaking in powerful musical moments in NYC under the tutelage of his trumpet-slinging father, Francis Bonny, and later as a teen immersed in New York’s busy indie-hip-hop scene. The Pittsburgh-based keyboard cosmonaut has been grabbing ears since his days hooking up beats with the hip hop crew East Liberty Quarters, but after slinging spicy one-offs to a slew of hot labels like Omega Supreme, Voyage Funktastique and Razor N Tape (as well as contributing production to Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y’s 2009 project), the time has come for a full-length featuring his growing modern funk repertoire. “I’m a ‘90s hip hop dude, but I grew up on that ‘80s funk stuff,” Buscrates acknowledges. DJ gigs provided a working knowledge of the jams that moved a contemporary crowd, and as his collection of keyboards and drum machines grew he began blending the best of both decades with his personal futuristic edge. “I was nice on the MPC but I wanted to have a little more dynamic range with what I was doing,” he notes. The self-described “certified synth geek” was soon branching into sounds that recalled ‘80s legend Kashif crossed with the hip hop bounce of DJ Spinna, and the modern funk community took\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003enotice. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003eFor his first full-length, Buscrates has crewed up with an ace team of collaborators, featuring vocalist Sally Green on the bouncy lead single “Lost And Found” and “Eight Nine.” Kate Moe Dee takes over mic duties for the second single, “How Ya Gonna Do It,” a slinky groove that slides in place alongside groups like the Sunburst Band and Rene \u0026amp; Angela as an exemplar of sophisticated R\u0026amp;B. Adding to those credentials are the sultry vocals of Anda on “Believe,” but of course, it wouldn’t be a Buscrates set without some stank, neck-snapping instrumentals. “Five Days” and “Sure Shot,” both collabos with the drum technician DJ Epik, will rattle speakers and have already been lighting up message boards on recent Buscrates DJ sets. The beauty of Lagartijeando’s work is its ability to marry seemingly unrelated styles and sounds to something seamless and wholly original.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Isla de Sol,” the opening track, introduces the album with a taste of Mati’s classic sound: Andean pan flute, the familiar chugging rhythm of a cumbia beat, luscious string arrangements, and a sampled vocal. Moving on, “Mano de Fatima” (the project’s second single) sees a fusion of traditional Moroccan Gnawa instrumentation with digital cumbia rhythms, featuring the work of Khalil Mounji on vocals and guembri (aka sintir, the three-stringed, skin-covered lute used in Gnawa music). Eva de Marce - a singer-songwriter-producer based in Madrid - takes centre-stage on “Tierra Natal,” with her vocals coming through in a rich whisper, singing a melody reminiscent of a\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e lullaby.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAt the album’s halfway mark, Lagartijeando introduces a new direction for his sound with “Onda,” a collaboration with the Brazilian artist Tagua Tagua. An earworm of a melody is sung over a joyous beat that nods to pop sensibilities while being satisfyingly infused with Zundel’s sonic DNA. It’s a gem of a tune that suggests an exciting new sound for the Argentinian. A few more collaborations close out the album, two with Mexican singer-songwriter Madeleine Bachan Kaur (“Crepúsculo” \u0026amp; “La Montaña Sagrada”), “Magaleña” with Javier Arce, and the album closer “Ware” featuring Sajra. Moving on, “Mano de Fatima” (the project’s second single) sees a fusion of traditional Moroccan Gnawa instrumentation with digital cumbia rhythms, featuring the work of Khalil Mounji on vocals and guembri (aka sintir, the three-stringed, skin-covered lute used in Gnawa music). Eva de Marce - a singer-songwriter-producer based in Madrid - takes centre-stage on “Tierra Natal,” with her vocals coming through in a rich whisper, singing a melody reminiscent of a\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e lullaby.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAt the album’s halfway mark, Lagartijeando introduces a new direction for his sound with “Onda,” a collaboration with the Brazilian artist Tagua Tagua. An earworm of a melody is sung over a joyous beat that nods to pop sensibilities while being satisfyingly infused with Zundel’s sonic DNA. It’s a gem of a tune that suggests an exciting new sound for the Argentinian.
