A few years ago, Taylor Deupree created a series of compositions entirely based on feedback loops, which nearly made their way out as solo work. After some discussions with the label, he decided to invite someone to bring them to life and finish what had been sitting in the drawer for a long time. Enter The Humble Bee. Consisting of four variations on “Sacred House”, a minimal, haunting composition first released on his 2025 album Ston Elaióna, Sacred House (Versions) continues Bennett’s engagement with resonance, empty space, and the small details hidden just below, using piano, bass flute, and synthesizers to create remarkably different yet entirely coherent new versions of the same piece of music.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe EP opens with “Sacred House (Piano)”, recorded on a Steinway tuned in a just-intonation raga scale by Bennett’s late collaborator Michael Harrison. Positioning the work in the physical realm, the piano was close-miked to capture its microscopic, shimmering resonance patterns in high definition. The late summer soundscape from outside of the studio is just perceptable, placing the listener directly in the room with the piano - the air becomes audible as Bennett’s patient chord progressions unfold.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Sacred House (Bass Flute)” uses Bennett’s bass flute, here multi-tracked on top of itself three times. Arranged for woodwinds the piece takes on an almost regal air, its held notes bringing out beating tone illusions reminiscent of Phill Niblock’s “Four Full\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e Flutes”, but with more room to breathe. “Sacred House (Prophet)” uses a Prophet synthesizer, bringing the EP into a hyper-real space. Long tones glide across a burning horizon and melt into the sky, in contrast to the delicate water beads of the original version for DX7, which closes out the EP.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs with much of Bennett’s music, focused listening can reveal previously unheard dimensions of sound and trigger vivid, subconscious imagery. The title “Sacred House” stems from the building that housed the oracle of ancient Dodoni in Greece, the country in which Bennett resides. Unique to the Dodoni temple was the sacred oak tree in its courtyard; priests and priestesses would listen to the wind rustling through its leaves, and to ringing tones from bronze cauldrons, interpreting these sounds as divine wisdom. The American born, Athens, Greece, based flautist, synthesist, and composer weaves a strikingly singular electroacoustic excursion for bass flute and Yamaha DX7ii, largely recorded in the golden haze of the early morning hours - bending time at the otherworldly juncture of consciousness and place. Translating from Greek as “in the olive grove”, Ston Elaióna is permeated with the ambiences of the ancient and present world, guided into form by a playfully rigorous approach to sound.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eInitially emerging during the mid 2000s as part of Columbus, Ohio’s noise scene, before relocating to NYC around 2010, Bennett’s diverse activities picked up an increasing sense of pace over the following decade - performing and recording as a solo artist (JAB), with the trio Forma and with CV \u0026amp; JAB, his prolific duo with his partner Christina Vantzou, as well as playing in Jon Gibson’s ensemble among many other multifaceted collaborations. However, since 2020 the flautist and electroacoustic composer has existed in a semi nomadic state: drifting between Brooklyn, Brussels, extensive tours, and Greece, where he finally came to rest in Athens last year. Drawing upon a carefully honed attentiveness to the environments and\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e experiences of everyday life, Ston Elaióna is a suite of nine pieces (with an additional track exclusive to physical formats), many of them composed and played live as the early morning sun touched the Parthenon, in full view from Bennett’s studio window in Athens. Bennett’s refinement and restraint, honed over his years adrift, led him to adopt a limited palette focused on his primary instrument, the bass flute, and a Yamaha DX7ii synthesizer tuned to just intonation scales.
