Though recorded as a duo, Vlad and Ilya introduce a third, hidden voice through the use of field recordings captured between 2022 and 2024 in India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, and Bali. The hum of engines, the drone of nighttime cities, and the bellowing of a massive ox blend with both technological and natural sounds. Echoes, reverberations, and waves from Vlad and Ilya’s synthesizers do more than complement the collected material. They merge into a single sonic canvas, filled with life from different sides of memory, especially intriguing on deeper listening.

All tracks on The Longest Day were recorded live in a single take, without overdubs, edits, or post-processing. On a summer day in 2024, Ilya and Vlad met, brewed tea, played back the recordings from their travels, and began to play, responding in real time to shifts in the sonic palette. As Vlad Dobrovolski explains:

"We left the recordings as they are, uncut. In some places, loud sounds captured up close literally burst to the forefront. Of course, we could have smoothed them out with editing or compression, but we chose not to. Maybe that’s why the recordings feel so alive. Everything happens right next to the listener. We weren’t aiming for any particular effect. We were simply listening and playing."

The album truly breathes. It feels alive and organic. The music of The Longest Day is like the sky gazing down at the earth. The field recordings carry an airy openness, while the yearning, shimmering synth tones respond in kind. At times, the music takes on extra dimensions, morphing into a phantasmagoric sonic animation ("Old Grass Becomes Fireflies”). In others, it echoes the classic New Age sound of the ’80s ("Plum Fruit Starts to Turn Yellow”), or dissolves into an all-consuming drone ("The Misty Moon”). Yet throughout, it remains natural, tender, meditative, and deliberate, crafted with love.
