The acclaimed group — now consisting of Carlos Hernandez, Julian Fader, Ethan Bassford, and Felicia Douglass — has stripped back their sound to its core. Following the departure of Kye (fka Becca Kauffman) in 2019, Ava Luna re-emerges with a focus on the fundamental elements of drums, bass, and the dual vocals of Carlos and Felicia.

The new album is decidedly Earth-bound, drawing heavily on the members' shared experiences and their deep roots in New York City. This back-to-basics approach was a conscious decision to move away from the expansive, "cosmic" feel of their previous album, Moon 2. Instead, the album delves into the nuances of everyday life, exploring themes of frustration and exhaustion that come with the mundane realities of work and survival, but also the joy and power in moving through life in community and chosen family, and finding precarious rootedness. For instance, "Lasting Impression" captures the feeling of being fed up at a job, while "Math Money Job" offers a playful, body-conscious take on a friendly reunion, in the form of a schoolyard chant.

At the heart of the album is the rhythmic interplay between Julian Fader's drums and Ethan Bassford's bass, forming a "close to the earth, melting into the sidewalk" foundation. This deliberate focus on the rhythm section was a key part of their creative process, ensuring the songs could stand strong in their most stripped-down format before any additional layers were introduced. Julian specifically cites Soul Coughing as an influence, particularly their use of crude sampling, which can be heard scattered throughout the record, including on "Frame of Us," where their powerful rhythm section.

Moving beyond traditional lead and backup roles, Carlos and Felicia's voices dance, weave, and harmonize, often blending into a singular, almost supernatural entity. This meticulous and thoughtful approach to vocal arrangement allows for a wider variety of melodic outcomes and requires a high degree of collaborative thought. On "Archive," their voices are fragmented, weaving in and out of synchronicity, mirroring the meticulous organization of an archival system.

While the album's core is mindfully minimalist, the production is far from sparse. Legendary percussionist Larry McDonald (Gil Scott-Heron, King Tubby) joins the band on congas and percussion, while subtle orchestrations, faint drifts of piano, a touch of Carlos’s famous guitar noise, and samples from his parents' obscure records, punctuate the landscape, creating a rich yet uncluttered sound.

Their evolution in approach allows for careful refinement while capturing singular moments and happy accidents. The album also touches on universal experiences, like the pandemic-era disorientation in "Social Diving," which Julian describes as his best Digable Planets impression. "My Walk" is an homage to Brooklyn’s rich tapestry of immigrant communities — a journey from Carlos's apartment in Flatbush to Felicia's in Sunset Park. in which snippets of at least a half dozen different languages drift into earshot.

Ultimately, Ava Luna's self-titled album is a testament to almost twenty years of shared musical sensibility, now distilled into its barest elements. The album paints an intimate yet exaggerated portrait of NYC, a cacophony of jagged post-punk, funk, and dance beats giving way to lush strings and spacious minimalism. Songs like "Your Man" showcase a raw urge to call out toxic behavior, while "Fancy" champions holding onto dignity in the face of adversity.

Delicately and compassionately woven with interviews of Shabason’s mother from whom the album takes its name, Anne finds its creator navigating a labyrinth of subtle and tragic emotions arising from his mother's struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Across the nine vivid postcards of jazz-laden ambience that comprise the album, Shabason unwraps these difficult themes with great care and focus revealing the unseen aspects of degenerative diseases that force us to re-examine common notions of self, identity, and mortality.

Shabason’s uncanny ability to manoeuvre through such microscopic feelings is mirrored by his capacity to execute a similar tightrope-walk through musical genres. His music occupies a specific space that is as palpable as it is difficult to pin labels to. On Anne’s second track “Deep Dark Divide” rays of effected saxophone shine behind clouds of digital synthesizer that echoes the sound of jazz in the late 80s, but with a Jon Hassell-esque depth of sensibility that consciously subverts the stylistic inoffensiveness of that era. There is detail and idiosyncrasy beneath Shabason’s dawn-of-the-CD-era sheen that elevates the album far beyond a mere aesthetic exercise.

Still, the sounds on Anne are not so experimentally opaque as to stand in the way of the album’s through-line of sincerity and emotionality. When dissonance is employed it is punctual and meaningful, like on album-middler “Fred and Lil” where a six-minute cascade of breathy textures builds suddenly to an agitated growl, only to abruptly give way to Anne Shabason speaking intimately about her relationship to her own parents. Snippets of such conversations see her taking on something like a narrator role across Anne while the sound of her voice itself is sometimes effected to become a musical texture entwined into the fabric of the songs without always being present or audible. The subsequent piece “Toh Koh” then drifts into playful disorientation as a lone female voice echoes the two syllables of the title, recalling the vocal techniques of composer Joan La Barbara, or even the light-hearted mantras of Lucky Dragons. From here the album veers back onto its aesthetic thoroughfare with “November” where Shabason lays muted brass textures atop a wavepool of electric chords provided by none other than the ambient cult-hero Gigi Masin, one of Anne’s many integral collaborators.

The serene tragedy of the album distils itself gracefully into the ironically titled album closer “Treat it Like a Wine Bar” wherein flutters of piano and mournfully whispered woodwinds seem to evaporate particle by delicate particle, leaving the listener with a faint emotional afterglow like a dream upon waking. There is a corollary to be drawn here with what it must be like to feel one’s own mind and body drift away slowly until nothing remains, while the collection of memories and abilities that we use to denote the “self” softens into eternity. On Anne, it is precisely this fragile exchange of tranquillity and anguish that Joseph Shabason has proven his singular ability to articulate.

Artist : Joseph Shabason

Label : Western Vinyl

cat no : WV182cd

["ambient","cd","jazz","new","western vinyl
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/files/ann_6108a022-530a-4728-b898-caef00101ff8.jpg?v=1760054943","//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/files/ann1_c33876ea-fd6b-4ffc-b54e-5e5e8a55940a.jpg?v=1760054943
//tobirarecords.com/cdn/shop/files/ann_6108a022-530a-4728-b898-caef00101ff8.jpg?v=1760054943
Title

Click here to see more Western Vinyl releases available at Tobira.

----------------------------

CD.

Tracklist:

"}

The record closes out at around 1:15am, leaving the story to be continued. If this sounds a bit noirish, that’s because it is. “Film noir detectives always start out looking immaculate, but by the end of the film they have a torn collar, a black eye, their slacks are stained, and they’ve started slapping people around in desperation,” Birnbaum says. “Are they the good guy anymore? It’s a comparison that threatens both to mislead and sell short, but it’s difficult not to see things while listening to The Streets Like Beds Still Warm –– perhaps a slowly swinging Tiffany lamp just above the narrator’s head as he’s a little more than half-drunk, scrawling a brilliantly poetic, antiheroic tale on a bar napkin. Be assured, though, this is not The Heart of Saturday Night and it’s not In the Wee Small Hours. In fact, The Streets Like Beds Still Warm’s musical precedents come from distinctly different corners of the musical universe. The band draws direct influence from the work of alt-jazz contemporaries Anna Butterss and Jeff Parker as well as ambient progenitor Brian Eno.
