"Parassitismo from Genova come back with a vengeance delivering an impressive second effort, after a much praised self-titled debut cassette on their home imprint, Diazepam (also reissued on CD by AAD).
Eerie, cold and murky synth-driven PE with a piercing dosage of feedback loops and junk / glass wreckage. "Un destino perfido" [trad. "A wicked fate"] has been recorded during a rather black summertime in the band's rehearsal room, located in the glorious Staglieno cemetery; apparently some voices and noises (E.g. chain noises) that you can hear in this cassette weren't originally supposed to be there, nor have any logical explanation, but we all welcomed them."

On their album Philadelphia, Nicholas Krgovich, Joseph Shabason, and Chris Harris chase a similar kind of romance toward the mundane and miniscule details made more visible by the world’s newfound relationship with the Great Indoors. The three musicians, who convened on a shared love of New Age music, create a space of sonic refuge out of softly electrified textures, burbling live instrumentation, and Shabason’s lacquered synth work, all of which support Krgovich’s koan-like poetry about showers before bed, dusty minivans, sips of gatorade, and the modern minutiae rendered beautiful by mere observation.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eContrasting the forced trend of remote collaborations, Philadelphia was recorded across three days of sessions in Toronto, pre-COVID. “Somewhere back in 2018 we started to pass demos back and forth over email and we quickly got about eight song sketches together,” explains Shabason. “Then in fall of 2019 we all realised that if we didn’t get into the same room together we were never gonna finish this album.” The trio’s physical proximity while recording\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e underwrites the hushed tones that pervade the album, which itself reads like the kind of quiet, personal conversation that can only happen in close quarters lest it be washed away in the din of public life. He chooses instead to reveal the romanticism of the world hidden in plain sight while Harris and Shabason deepen the sentiment with reflective, instrumental excursions. Whispered, conversational synthesizers fill out “Tuesday Afternoon” over a backdrop of birdsong, and vocals make only brief appearances near the track’s beginning and end. Conversely, “Friday Afternoon” is lyrically driven, and delivers an anthemic refrain that constitutes one of the most emotional moments of Philadelphia. After a postcard-like recounting of seeing a roadside stranger experience car trouble, Krgovich repeats the hushed mantra “wrap your loving arms around it”, almost as a call-to-action for embracing the present moment as it is instead of as it ought to be. “I Don’t See the Moon” is a lighter mood by comparison. I had stumbled on a box of Punjabi records for sale at Bollywood Music Center on Gerrard St. East in Little India -- a store where I had been buying hindi film records for years. I wasn't too familiar with Punjabi music beyond UK Bhangra, took a chance and loved the records; over some time I bought every Punjabi record in the store. I studied the records and bought a tumbi from Kala Kendar, a shop next to the music store that sold instruments. I learned the tumbi from Youtube videos and copying the sounds on the records.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI had started my all-analog record label Local Dish, cutting vinyl records from tape recordings in late 2019 and quickly had to change pace when the pandemic began. I shifted back to producing music mostly on my own and working with recordings I had made over the years.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFor years I had been interested in electronic tabla machines and shruti boxes -- somewhere along the way I became aware of vintage analog Radel machines and they became the one category of gear I was desperate to find. In Christmas of 2020 I received from my partner a gift of a vintage Taalmala that was by coincidence\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e found locally on Kijiji. Over the next week I produced one track a day, experimenting with composing music in the Punjabi folk-styles I had listened to and studied in the context of a minimal electronic style based on the sounds of the Taalmala. I compiled these into a 4-track EP inspired by the \"Super-7\" format that was commonly released in India in the 70s and 80s; usually 4-6 tracks running at 33 rpm of regional folk, religious and popular music. I cut 5 copies and had no intent to release the record.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI had commonly at this time given demo discs of new tracks to Symon Warwick, the DJ behind the Turning Point party in Toronto to listen to and perhaps play out. I threw one of the Super-7 records in with some others I had produced and when he heard it, he loved it and wanted to put it out. To release the EP he created a label, Turning Point records and it was surprise \"hit\". We cut over 100 copies and it led to more releases on his label as well as more attention to Local Dish releases.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOver time I acquired both a vintage Radel Talometer and electronic Tanpura locally via classifieds and experimented with integrating their sounds into the recordings as well. The basic idea was to take these machines designed for practice, which had their own incredible sound due to technological limitations and apply them to Indian music. Everything I had heard of these machines in recordings and videos only used them in an abstract electronic context. Following a short run of dates in Germany, Neher was struck by an observation that shaped the new record. His instrument had been receding to the background live in a way it didn’t have to – there was room to be more than just a vessel for the other players. As a result he steps forward on Everything Is Possible with more melodic and virtuosic moments.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFlugelhornist Dalton Lam and saxophonist Paul Gutheil’s lyrical playing sounds as though they’ve found comfort in each other’s company. They share exchanges like great conversationalists, and at times prove that silence is peak communication. Across the album, drummer Mike Thievin sits notably more present.
