Discreet Archive:

"nothingness is a work for double bass and tape recorders that listens inward, toward the erosion of gesture and the slow drift of sound into memory. Composed in 2025 and recorded in Livorno, the piece unfolds across four movements titled travestimenti (“disguises”), each tracing a process of deconstruction and quiet reintegration.

The double bass, played exclusively with the bow, is stripped of its usual weight and force; its resonance is explored through natural harmonics, multiphonics, and microvariations. These fragile tones are captured, looped, and reintroduced by portable tape recorders, whose simple mechanics of spooling, rewinding, and stretching create a delicate system of accumulation and decay. Sounds return altered, smudged, or emptied of their first intention, and memory becomes a material that fails and rebuilds itself.

Across the four parts, gesture encounters space and silence as active agents. Sounds drift into the room and return diminished or reshaped, meeting the quiet as resistance and as resonance. Repetition and variation become a way of feeling out the edges of presence, as if the instrument were testing how little can be said before it disappears into the acoustic of the space. The work lingers in this tension, searching for a fragile, lived relationship with memory and place.

Born in 1994, Michele Bondesan is a musician and sound explorer whose practice spans the extended techniques of the double bass, the construction of participatory listening spaces, and the use of modest analog tools as both timbral and narrative devices. His fascination with cassette recorders, vulnerable to wear, failure, and environmental interference, frames sound as something inherently unstable: part memory, part disappearance. "
