"Recorded in a state of transition between her long-time home in Littlefield, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico, this music presents an expansive tapestry of family mythologies, symbolic resonance, and spiritual wayfinding.

After receiving her grandfather’s sailing logs from the 1960s and ‘70s, Korsmo began reckoning with a unique period of personal upheaval and her relationship to her own creative practice. The logs provided a direct connection to the artistic and intellectual people in her family who came before, a familiar reflection within which she might come to find herself more deeply, as well as a rich source for plundering lyrical structures.

Recorded throughout 2023 at both the Wind Tide studio – with engineering support from Andrew Weathers – and her new home and workspace in New Mexico, ‘Silhouettes, Spires’ channels the searching energy Korsmo felt at the time. Over the course of its four tracks, she engages an intuitive approach to composition that exudes a deep sense of presence and a wide-open spaciousness, anchoring the tonal palette around recordings made with her childhood piano, with vocals, shruti box, reed instruments, and Rhodes piano rounding out the soundscape.

Taken in context, ‘Silhouettes, Spires’ functions as a full-throated declaration that you’re never truly lost at sea, so long as you know where your North Star lies. "

Both musicians have fascinated Notice Recordings for quite a while, and both exhibit deep relationships with their instruments: flute and viola, respectively. Ángeles originally caught our attention via the TVL REC label, which he co-directs with Violeta García and Carlos Quebrada. Originally from Peru and now based in Mexico City, his non-traditional approach to flute involves extended techniques, electronic alterations, and microtonal textures. Working also as composer and producer for film, dance, and theatre, curator of music festivals, playing in various ensembles, and collaborating with such artists as Ka Baird, Anaïs Maviel, and Mabe Fratti, it is truly rewarding to hear a such a raw and cathartic set with NYC's Joanna Mattrey, a Notice Recordings alum, having been involved in two past releases (her third solo album, \"Soulcaster\", was released earlier this year). We’ve been following Mattrey’s viola explorations for years now, and her honest, playful, intense, unpretentious, and dedicated solo and collaborative performances have consistently floored us. A 2021 ISSUE Project Room and 2022 Roulette resident, and graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Mattrey continues to exist in both established music worlds and also on the very fringes of outsider art, with her heart clearly in the avant-garde. This recording exemplifies that: Ángeles and Mattrey perform in the former Santa Teresa la Antigua church and monastery complex which is now home to the Ex Teresa Arte Actual contemporary art space, a venue dedicated to contemporary performance and installation. Working also as composer and producer for film, dance, and theatre, curator of music festivals, playing in various ensembles, and collaborating with such artists as Ka Baird, Anaïs Maviel, and Mabe Fratti, it is truly rewarding to hear a such a raw and cathartic set with NYC's Joanna Mattrey, a Notice Recordings alum, having been involved in two past releases (her third solo album, \"Soulcaster\", was released earlier this year). We’ve been following Mattrey’s viola explorations for years now, and her honest, playful, intense, unpretentious, and dedicated solo and collaborative performances have consistently floored us. A 2021 ISSUE Project Room and 2022 Roulette resident, and graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Mattrey continues to exist in both established music worlds and also on the very fringes of outsider art, with her heart clearly in the avant-garde. This recording exemplifies that: Ángeles and Mattrey perform in the former Santa Teresa la Antigua church and monastery complex which is now home to the Ex Teresa Arte Actual contemporary art space, a venue dedicated to contemporary performance and installation. I have, since 2020, developed a number of chronic conditions from several Covid infections, causing me to lose my main sources of income and my ability to hyper fixate or exert myself for the extended periods of time my music work has generally required. After years of slow recovery, I am realizing I have no choice but to adapt. I realized one day that these tracks could stand alone without the video components. The title reflects a theme of dreams, ideas, fantasies, goals, and potential paths that exist somewhere but have not, for whatever reasons, materialized into this reality. They instead are contained, swirling and simmering. They must exist, if not tangibly here, then elsewhere. I picture them like glass orbs filled with gaseous starry substances that are sitting high up on some wizard goddess’s shelf in one of the worlds that overlays ours.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eMy interest, structurally, at the moment is in work that doesn't have a beginning, middle, or ending.
