Sascha Demand is a composer that comes from a contemporary and improvised musical background, collaborating with the likes of Ensemble Integrales and Vinko Globokar. Jürgen Hall works in electroacoustic experimental projects, theatre and film scores, with releases on Staubgold and Edition Stora. Charly Schöppner is known for his popular music releases such as Boytronic on major production companies in the 1980´s and composes for theatre, dance, and film scores. With only a couple of releases to date on the wonderful Meakusma imprint as well as an EP on Marmo, little is known about Giraffe. Giraffe themselves also list the radical music of the Viennese School (Schoenberg along with his pupils Berg and Webern) as well as the Köln School with its early electronic experiments as their main influence and inspiration. Conceptually, they were heavily inspired by particular styles of Ethiopian music such as the tizita, which often lacks any resolving cadences to leave you with it’s trademark evocation of longing without resolution.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eSo I guess there is a certain amount of irony in the name Music for Staying Warm. The flute, violin, guitar, keyboard, and bass clarinet phrases saunter at a pre-sleep pace, until a subdued, yet ecstatic Mass theme ushers in periodically. Delivering the warmth of life… it is a slow beauty. It brings me such happiness listening to this piece. Its continuity is cut with scissors and pasted about oddly… all soaked in a certain malaise; a resigned grace.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe next piece and other side of the LP, “Chancel,” is rather different. An audio journal flipped through, dropped on the ground, picked up and opened to another page. A confusing montage of world-ized musical snatches: car radios, church choirs emanating to\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ethe streets, moldy organs, domestic piano recordings. Similarly, machine vibrations, bodega conversations, and other environmental observations segue the harmony and disharmony of this listening experience. Crafting songs centered around it, Night CRIÚ’s intimate ecosystem of seven songs uses layers of vocal harmony and lyrics as ways to re-enter the body, and to speak to and uproot old scripts.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA ceremony of light and shade, Night CRIÚ’s unmoored sonic threads recall the cracks, fringes, forgotten agency and dormant personas that surface at night, waiting to be retrieved and integrated come daylight. Despite its economy, each song on Night CRIÚ breathes into an emotive expanse quintessential of Woods’s compositions, and true to her artistry, a search for new direction is ever present, expressed most keenly here in her writing for brass band and children’s choir.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA record that riles against bludgeoning monoculture in its reclaiming and mourning a lost innocence all at once, Night CRIÚ reaches to integrate lost and splintered parts of the whole, in making the unconscious conscious. Crafting songs centered around it, Night CRIÚ’s intimate ecosystem of seven songs uses layers of vocal harmony and lyrics as ways to re-enter the body, and to speak to and uproot old scripts.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA ceremony of light and shade, Night CRIÚ’s unmoored sonic threads recall the cracks, fringes, forgotten agency and dormant personas that surface at night, waiting to be retrieved and integrated come daylight. Despite its economy, each song on Night CRIÚ breathes into an emotive expanse quintessential of Woods’s compositions, and true to her artistry, a search for new direction is ever present, expressed most keenly here in her writing for brass band and children’s choir.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eA record that riles against bludgeoning monoculture in its reclaiming and mourning a lost innocence all at once, Night CRIÚ reaches to integrate lost and splintered parts of the whole, in making the unconscious conscious.
