At the time I was producing this work I was completely obsessed with sound synthesis and was reveling in the materiality of sound as sound. I was spending hours listening to how different sounds reacted to one another as they rubbed up against each other.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eI was living in a sort of shack on an artists colony in upstate NY. My little studio had no sound proofing and so everything I was working on would drift up to the main road that ran through the colony. Donald Fagen lived up that road and he would take walks past the shack. I took it home and pulled it apart. After discarding the keys and exposing the IC and circuit boards, I began to soldier connections between the IC and various copper nodes on the Keyboard. In some places, I installed switches and pots between the wires. Some of the wires I allowed to float above the board so that I could use alligator clips, or my fingers, to make temporary connections. This tape documents the sounds the new instrument produced. Each track utilizes some form of acoustic feedback, no-input mixing or recursive patching techniques as the central compositional principle.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eClosed circuit and acoustic feedback have been prominent features within experimental electronic compositions for well over 50 years. In 1968 Steve Reich made extensive use of audio Feedback in his work “Pendulum Music”. David Tudor and Alvin Lucier incorporated feedback systems in many iconic compositions. Much of John Cage's interest and questions of noise and its relation to music could be seen as an extension of concepts explored when artists introduce feedback into their performances and recording. Arguably the most prolific and influential artist who integrated feedback into her compositions is the French composer Éliane Radigue.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFeedback is released as a 300-copy limited edition cassette with 4-color risograph printed artwork by Never Brush my Teeth. In 1968 Steve Reich made extensive use of audio Feedback in his work “Pendulum Music”. David Tudor and Alvin Lucier incorporated feedback systems in many iconic compositions. Much of John Cage's interest and questions of noise and its relation to music could be seen as an extension of concepts explored when artists introduce feedback into their performances and recording.
