His grandmother passed away in 2021 and his grandfather in 2023. Ebina’s grandparents were a very ordinary family with nothing special to say. Nevertheless, they were invaluable to the artist, and the impact they both had on his life is significant. The title of the album refers to the fact that both grandparents passed away in the fall after a gap of two years. The album cover image was taken by Ebina himself on a vintage Contax film camera. After years in Tokyo and New York, he returned to his hometown outside Tokyo in 2018. While exploring scenic sounds using guitars, modular synthesizers and tape machines, Hiroshi also studied hichiriki and biwa, traditional gagaku instruments, and dance under the guidance of musicians from the Imperial Household Agency. Serendipity is a quintessential part of Ebina’s unique soundscapes, as he incorporates sound and silence that emerge and disappear as though by chance. His compositional process is like spreading dots and lines on a white paper and giving them some orders. Then those lines and dots start showing some shapes. For him, music is not necessarily about being accurate with rhythm or pitch. He is more concerned with texture, the spaces between each note, and how it feels to his ears. Having a master's degree in religious studies, Ebina’s music often explores topics inspired by Zen Buddhism and the spiritual realm. Starting in 2018, Ebina has been releasing his works from multiple labels throughout the world, including KITCHEN. LABEL, Mystery Circles and Seil Records. In September 2024, Ebina released his 6th solo album Into the Darkness of the Night. While working on his solo albums, Ebina is also active in collaboration with his fellow artists, including Hinako Omori, Tobias Wilden, IDRA, Kin Leonn and Erland Cooper, as well as commercial works for clients both inside and outside Japan. He also performs in multiple cities and countries including New York, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore, frequently sharing the stage with international artists like Khotin, Emily A. Sprague and Cool Maritime. February to April 2025, Ebina exhibited an installation featuring two ambient albums released at KITCHEN. LABEL at ArtScience Museum in Singapore.
