Disciplined and exploratory, it is like observing someone fixing a watch: methodical and calm, periodically getting up and selecting a tool, working for stretches of full concentration, and hearing the footsteps and rustle of clothing. The titles of the pieces – “Distinct” and “Concealed” – suggest tensions between public self-presentation and private self-knowledge, and yet these recordings were made live, with sounds of the room and the activity and movements of the players suggesting a theatricality that complicates both poles.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Distinct” plays like a long-delayed catch-up session between friends, seriousness arising periodically before resolving into active and glassy communication. If “Distinct” is a catch-up, “Concealed” plays as a tense second meeting: piano-led, with zipped spoken-word loops and long stretches of pause, eventually falling into a satisfying equilibrium. The barely controlled nature of no-input mixing confronts the more manageable elements of electronics and tape, with keyboards complicating the relationship. Brahja is a deep ethereal dive into the true soul of the jazz fabric woven out of the classic era of spiritual jazz and the avant-garde. It is introspectively expressive and communicative of an extremely existential and transitional period within the lexicon of jazz. In many ways the music found on this album can be construed as cinematic and even theatrical. The experience is sometimes mysterious and sleuthing, as with the compositions, “Qwikness” and “Just Passing Through,” and sometimes haunting, conveyed best with pieces, “In the Mess” and “Medicine Woman.” Also, there are atmospheric elements which exemplify the ethereal and melancholy as with, “Keepers” and “Welcom to Wohlom.” Moreover, there is an absolutely distinguishable character embedded in each of the album’s tracks, and none of them rob each other of individuality. For the roughly 20 years since, the project has remained a live-only endeavour, reforming and playing during rare moments that the three members are in the same place, using recordings made during those performances to create three more full-lengths - Ramses II, Memphis, and Revolt Of Capricorn - that appeared between 2005 and 2009.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eOld Light - Nova Scotia’s first full-length to appear in 13 years and the first to be issued on vinyl - draws on live recordings made across the years spanning the early to mid-2000s. Encountering the trio fully embracing a radical search for creative freedom, while dispelling all notions of dedicated instrumentation in an “anything goes” approach, the LP’s seven tracks cover a vast amount of ground, while retaining a unifying logic and sense of cohesion.
