Artist statement :

After living in the same apartment for 13 years, my partner and I decided it was time to find our own place. In June of 2021 we closed on our first home in Chicago. This meant packing up and moving “Dr. Pirate’s Ship”, the cute name I had given my “studio” in honor of an orange tabby cat we had for about 8 years. This studio was really half of a small spare bedroom I shared with my partner, I would work on music while she worked on photography. Besides the space limitations of this shared room, there were the polite sound limitations one has living in a 3-flat vintage walk-up.

The new house allowed for Dr. Pirate’s Ship to no only be its own room, allowing for a better layout and access to instruments and amplifiers, it also lost the “polite sound” limitation as we now have no shared walls. These recordings are the first made in this new space, exploring some silly microphone and amp ideas. All guitar and Rhodes were recorded through all 4 amps at the same time with all 4 mics. This let me play with mixing the unique tone of each amp/mic to get some fun and full sounding takes.

The pieces themselves are my explorations in finding the spaces I used to enjoy sitting in. The past 2 years of the pandemic exacerbated issues about our former apartment that were really overwhelming. Searching/Finding/Packing and then moving, along with trying to work and navigate a world that was coming out of and then back into the pandemic (we had what felt like 2 weeks of almost normal until fears of the delta variant came into the news) left me with very little energy to create. These pieces were created with the focus of trying to get back into that routine of recording, editing, mixing that I was so much more deeply in prior to March 2020. They are mixtures of dealing with the trauma and expressing the joy of having something stable in a world that is very much not”
