"Kaizen is the PITP solo début of French ambient artist and sound sculptor Almøst Silent (aka Guy Teixeira), whose deep drones, towering harmonies, and nuanced structures strike a unique emotional chord on each of the album’s fourteen pieces. Borrowed from Japanese philosophy, Kaizen denotes “change for the better”, reflecting the process of rebuilding health, confidence, and artistic identity through intuitive creation. “It is a record defined by patience and persistence,” Teixeira notes, “proving that growth doesn’t require dramatic reinvention, only the commitment to keep moving forward, one thoughtful step at a time.”

There is a spectrum of styles, influences, and effects in the Lake Mary catalogue, but all of it can be characterized by patience and a kind of measured beauty. His playing is spare but not without energy, and it moves through billows of violin, saxophone, nearly-transparent synthesizers, field recordings and the sirenic singing of Patrick Shiroishi, who is best known as one of the busiest and most versatile saxophone players in the contemporary American\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e avant garde. The fact that Prymek plays so often and so generously with so many different players is itself a framework for hearing the music. This music is nothing if not generous, open, and warm. It is music that proceeds from and returns to tenderness. In fact, it is an elegy. Prymek wrote Slow Grass while his beloved dog Favorite’s health was declining throughout 2019 and 2020, and the work is named for the moments toward the very end of Favorite’s life when she became immobile, and Prymek and she would simply lay and watch the grass grow. “Life is full of pain,” says the late John Berger. “Tenderness is in part a response to that. Leaning on his bank of organic percussive sounds, Vasin is able to concoct a tactile aura that he fills with eerie fluctuating repetitions that shift subtly, sometimes\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e imperceptibly. The cavernous reverb and booming bass that supported his last few albums is still present, now employed as scaffolding for different architectures: skittering sequences and ornamented overlapping phrases that owe as much to Steve Reich's hallowed minimalist compositions as they do to Indonesian traditional forms. Lulling, almost hypnotic tessellations appear like fractals on the polished surfaces, morphing from jazz to techno and dub while retaining gamelan's haunting xenharmonic resonances and Vasin's concept becomes crystal clear.
