That whole period of almost 30 years was a steady stream of changing ideas and modes of operation. The intent was to keep it interesting for myself and for the audience. I had the personal realization that I could take a break from the endless road of live performance. So I stopped playing for two years. Coming out of the pandemic I was less interested in such a deep focus on live performance. The practice spot gave me the opportunity to truly play for myself. A welcome change. I began focusing on a singular idea. Study that idea the way a jazz musician is dedicated to his instrument.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis is the set up I’ve been working with for the past two years: I had found an industrial metal table at work and promptly put a contact mic on it. Started using a singing bowl on the table with various effects. Along with an oscillator, brushes and a spring stretched on a 4’ piece of spruce. I also use a modified Korg Monotron. I like the way the singing bowl resonates thru the table. The percussive element of the brushes and spring maintain the visceral aspects while I feel that the bowl and oscillator represent an attempt to find a deeper focus and thoughtfulness in what I do with sound.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI recorded the record at my studio in Erving, ma. My relationship with recording has always been challenging. I find paying for time at a recording studio to be stressful and I tend to not like what comes out of those laboratory situations.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eI have a very simple approach these days. I might fill a few blown out tracks on the ol’ Tascam. Then I will give it a quick live edit and mix down to a master tape. I don’t have a lot of patience for learning techniques or technology. I don’t have a computerized recording setup.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe recording for Bill was born out of frustration with the recording process. It took me a long time to get off my ass and document what I’ve been doing. Once I did it came together quickly. One day to record and the next day to re listen and mix. Then at some point a desire for more challenging and dynamic sounds took hold of me. I’ve been chasing difficult music ever since. The Do it yourself attitude from punk rock scene of the nineties is what drove me to start making my own music. I didn’t have like minded friends in high school to start a band with. So I played alone and made noise.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eHistorically playing music has always been a visceral experience for me. I don’t spend too much time thinking about or debating what I should or shouldn’t do. During my time out there I drove around everywhere and enjoyed being in a natural environment that was different from New England. I have 4 nieces and wanted to get to know them instead of being that uncle they might meet once. An orange light bulb captures and plays back samples of Marela’s voice in real time while casting shadows around the room. These compositions draw from elements of experimental music, theater, performance art, and popular song. She envisioned this way of approaching performance as a vocalist seeking an embodied physical experience on stage without\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e the need to be proficient at playing a traditional instrument. She makes use of subtle movements of her body, as well as different gestural mappings using sensors, microprocessors, and training with a neural network to inform her live vocal processing. This allows her the freedom of improvisation within composed parameters to control discrete electronic and sampled sounds. Her voice acts as a storyteller and guides the audience through an embodied exploration of self in relation to creative identity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUnlike Marela’s previously released albums, My Inner Rest was written and composed to be performed live. She was set to start recording after graduating with an MFA from Mills College in 2020, however due to the pandemic and the death of her father, the album was shelved and she left the Bay Area for two years. After deciding to return to Oakland to be closer to friends and her music community, the album was eventually recorded at Littlefield Concert Hall. Former Mills technical director and friend Brendan Glasson engineered several sessions between 2022-23, capturing what would become My Inner Rest in a cathartic close to both Marela's time at Mills College, and the institution itself. The unexpected gestation period gave Marela deeper insight into the power of her creative endeavor, and crystallized the need to perform the material live. Each piece was ultimately recorded on stage, wearing a wireless headset mic and no headphones, as the singer was immersed with her sounds amplified in the room. Some songs took as many as 30 takes in order to capture her ideal performance. After a year of listening and refining these recordings, Marela has yielded a cohesive and intriguing collection of songs that exist apart from the live performances, in their own time and space.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe title My Inner Rest is borrowed from an encounter with the work of outsider visual artist Madge Gill on display at the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. Gill believed to have been creatively guided by a spirit she called \"Myrninerest\" to complete many mediumistic works. Marela encountered Gill’s work at a time of transition, losing touch with her creative spirit after a stifling encounter with the music industry. Having signed with a big indie label in her mid twenties, the experience left her disenchanted and artistically stagnant. Marela wished to return to a mindset of being a vessel for creative spirit to flow through, and to move further away from a capitalistic mindset of branding and profit. Many artists go through phases of their life where they become disconnected to their identity as an artist and their own work. In the process of struggling through this difficult time in her life, Marela’s path to reconnecting with her creative spirit again was a deeply healing and meditative undertaking. An orange light bulb captures and plays back samples of Marela’s voice in real time while casting shadows around the room. These compositions draw from elements of experimental music, theater, performance art, and popular song. She envisioned this way of approaching performance as a vocalist seeking an embodied physical experience on stage without\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e the need to be proficient at playing a traditional instrument. She makes use of subtle movements of her body, as well as different gestural mappings using sensors, microprocessors, and training with a neural network to inform her live vocal processing. She was set to start recording after graduating with an MFA from Mills College in 2020, however due to the pandemic and the death of her father, the album was shelved and she left the Bay Area for two years. After deciding to return to Oakland to be closer to friends and her music community, the album was eventually recorded at Littlefield Concert Hall. Former Mills technical director and friend Brendan Glasson engineered several sessions between 2022-23, capturing what would become My Inner Rest in a cathartic close to both Marela's time at Mills College, and the institution itself. The unexpected gestation period gave Marela deeper insight into the power of her creative endeavor, and crystallized the need to perform the material live. Each piece was ultimately recorded on stage, wearing a wireless headset mic and no headphones, as the singer was immersed with her sounds amplified in the room. Some songs took as many as 30 takes in order to capture her ideal performance. After a year of listening and refining these recordings, Marela has yielded a cohesive and intriguing collection of songs that exist apart from the live performances, in their own time and space.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe title My Inner Rest is borrowed from an encounter with the work of outsider visual artist Madge Gill on display at the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. Gill believed to have been creatively guided by a spirit she called \"Myrninerest\" to complete many mediumistic works. Marela encountered Gill’s work at a time of transition, losing touch with her creative spirit after a stifling encounter with the music industry. Having signed with a big indie label in her mid twenties, the experience left her disenchanted and artistically stagnant. Marela wished to return to a mindset of being a vessel for creative spirit to flow through, and to move further away from a capitalistic mindset of branding and profit. Many artists go through phases of their life where they become disconnected to their identity as an artist and their own work. In the process of struggling through this difficult time in her life, Marela’s path to reconnecting with her creative spirit again was a deeply healing and meditative undertaking.
