"1987 is Bernhard Hollinger’s debut album as a bandleader, bassist and composer. Symbolizing a highly personal transformative process which has lasted several years, this album tells the story of the obstacles and twists that were encountered and eventually have morphed throughout time into its final form.

The music is dedicated to the impulsiveness and playfulness of dreams and the subconscious. The fascination for this concept has its origins in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Dreams, the mind and intuition remain vast and mysterious territories, whose ambiguity has pulled Bernhard in. He drew inspiration from Lynch’s aesthetics and symbolism, including the use of abstract, contrasting elements and the break-up of time, thinking more in parallel dimensions and effect, leaving space for individual interpretation, projection and exploration. Sleeping Tapes pays tribute to the audiobook by Jeff Bridges that bears the same title and rounds off the album as the only non-original track. 1987 is both a personal milestone and a therapeutic process, an authentic expression that aspires to open portals and resonate on deeper levels.

For this journey Bernhard surrounded himself with an international group of highly talented musicians, both emerging and established, including Teis Semey, Grammy Nominated guitarist Ashton Sellars, August Baronas, Matthias van de Brande, as well as New Orleans-based Larry Sieberth and Grammy Nominated trumpeter Ashlin Parker. "

I looked at the lineup in awe—wow, this looks promising: Norwegian tenor legend Knut Riisnæs, our long-time collaborator Christian Reim (whose funeral I sadly attended this past April), and the backbone of our beloved Erik Andresen release, Svein Christiansen on drums, along with Terje Nordlie on double bass. I opened the casing, and the plastic was still on it. Ditlef said, “I got it after the gig, but I never actually played the tape—I never had a reel-to-reel machine.” The music exceeded all expectations. This needed to be released. So whenever we dig up something that makes us think, “Hey, this would make a great album”—whether it’s a radio broadcast or a live tape—we do it!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"802\" data-end=\"1493\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTrapped between the books on Ditlef Eckhoff’s shelf at his residence in Oslo-Holmlia, we found this tape. I looked at the lineup in awe—wow, this looks promising: Norwegian tenor legend Knut Riisnæs, our long-time collaborator Christian Reim (whose funeral I sadly attended this past April), and the backbone of our beloved Erik Andresen release, Svein Christiansen on drums, along with Terje Nordlie on double bass. I opened the casing, and the plastic was still on it. Ditlef said, “I got it after the gig, but I never actually played the tape—I never had a reel-to-reel machine.” The music exceeded all expectations. This needed to be released.
