For several months, they had been improvising together regularly, letting the music emerge from free-flowing conversations into sprawling, wordless performances that spanned genre and mood, departing from their more characteristic work as songwriters and composers to convey the types of emotions that transcend language. They thought of R\u0026amp;D as a boundless project that could fill the space of whatever room they found themselves in, responding to whatever feelings arose. Soon they located something that felt entirely their own.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eWith I’ll Send You a Sign, they invite us in on one of these evenings. “I would come home from practice and still be hearing the melodies we played,” Knishkowy reflects. “We wanted to make the record because we wanted to hear it.” Working with producer Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Florist), the pair challenged themselves to work quickly and intuitively, making decisions on the spot and trusting their instincts. Accordingly, these seven performances don’t just capture Knishkowy and El-Saleh in collaboration, showcasing their shared gifts for intimate, bittersweet melodies and warm yet visceral textures. Where their concerts have involved taking prompts and suggestive words from the audience, this time they turned to poetry by El-Saleh to inspire the music. As they played in the studio, Weinrobe processed the results in real time, operating as a third collaborator and adding an element of surreality that ensures the recordings feel vivid and multi-dimensional, alternatingly centered and disorienting.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThese songs are wide-ranging and cinematic without sacrificing the understated beauty that’s become a trademark of each artist’s catalog. The music spans hypnotic New Age to a kind of stormy psych-folk that builds on Knishkowy's past two instrumental works, 2021's Good Timing and 2023’s Hot Fruit. While the latter release marked Knishkowy and El-Saleh’s first collaboration—their harp playing helped crystallize that album’s unique atmosphere, somewhere between ambient Americana and spiritual jazz—it is the former that made El-Saleh a fan, providing comfort during a transitional period in their life. “It became a baseline of calm for me,” El-Saleh explained, describing how their familiarity with the contours of Knishkowy’s fingerpicking made them more comfortable finding their place alongside him. Due to their classical training on harp, they had previously avoided improvisation: “Now it’s the only thing I want to do,” they laugh. For several months, they had been improvising together regularly, letting the music emerge from free-flowing conversations into sprawling, wordless performances that spanned genre and mood, departing from their more characteristic work as songwriters and composers to convey the types of emotions that transcend language. They thought of R\u0026amp;D as a boundless project that could fill the space of whatever room they found themselves in, responding to whatever feelings arose. Soon they located something that felt entirely their own.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eWith I’ll Send You a Sign, they invite us in on one of these evenings. “I would come home from practice and still be hearing the melodies we played,” Knishkowy reflects. “We wanted to make the record because we wanted to hear it.” Working with producer Philip Weinrobe (Adrianne Lenker, Florist), the pair challenged themselves to work quickly and intuitively, making decisions on the spot and trusting their instincts. Accordingly, these seven performances don’t just capture Knishkowy and El-Saleh in collaboration, showcasing their shared gifts for intimate, bittersweet melodies and warm yet visceral textures. The entire album was tracked and mixed in just two days, adopting the spontaneous energy of their live show while taking advantage of the conducive environment of Brooklyn’s Sugar Mountain studio. Where their concerts have involved taking prompts and suggestive words from the audience, this time they turned to poetry by El-Saleh to inspire the music. As they played in the studio, Weinrobe processed the results in real time, operating as a third collaborator and adding an element of surreality that ensures the recordings feel vivid and multi-dimensional, alternatingly centered and disorienting.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThese songs are wide-ranging and cinematic without sacrificing the understated beauty that’s become a trademark of each artist’s catalog. The music spans hypnotic New Age to a kind of stormy psych-folk that builds on Knishkowy's past two instrumental works, 2021's Good Timing and 2023’s Hot Fruit. While the latter release marked Knishkowy and El-Saleh’s first collaboration—their harp playing helped crystallize that album’s unique atmosphere, somewhere between ambient Americana and spiritual jazz—it is the former that made El-Saleh a fan, providing comfort during a transitional period in their life. “It became a baseline of calm for me,” El-Saleh explained, describing how their familiarity with the contours of Knishkowy’s fingerpicking made them more comfortable finding their place alongside him.
