"Over the course of more than two decades, Philadelphia musician Bill Nace (guitar, taishogoto) has carved out unique collaborations across a wide range of contemporary improvisational practices, and though these range from solos to small groups, there’s a keen ear toward the immediate, stark tug of duets. Some of these meetings are one-offs for now (saxophonists Evan Parker and Masayo Koketsu), while others are regular partnerships that have evolved across continual play and refinement (violinist Samara Lubelski and saxophonists Paul Flaherty and Steve Baczkowski). Many of these recordings have been released via Open Mouth, the label that Nace founded in 2004 which documents not only his work, but also that of fellow travelers in the worlds of experimental rock, noise, free improvisation, electronic music, and spectral folk in more or less limited editions.

Rinse Cycle is the first recorded encounter between Nace and French saxophonist Sakina Abdou, whose searing and personally declarative solo CD, Goodbye Ground, was released by Relative Pitch at the close of 2022. From Lille, Abdou has participated in collectives for many years, but recent solo work has garnered her more attention (especially Stateside) and offers a clear and focused explication of her language. Having a defined unaccompanied approach allows for powerful duo situations to emerge––after all, figures like Evan Parker, Lubelski, and Flaherty have significant solo practices, and the development of a strict vocabulary on one’s own offers more conversational resilience. It’s as if isolation opens one up to deep and nuanced listening and the focus on structure and vocabulary grants a bevy of resources for the expanded field. That said, as a player Nace is less like a Derek Bailey or Masayuki Takayanagi in terms of directing the conversation (though he can) and more akin to Sunny Murray, providing a distinct carpet of sound (to quote Sunny Murray in April/May 1969’s Jazz & Pop, “the continuous cracking of glass”) that acts to both ratchet up tension incrementally and, in sparser moments, creates a complex, shifting surface on which one’s feet are en pointe.
