"calacuchi, the new album by karakuchi, is a mellow yet unpredictable collection of what could be considered downtempo beats. Drawing from electronic dance music’s chopped vocals and deconstructed house drums, it equally delves into heartfelt New Age melodies. Baroque horns duel with UFO synths, while beefy subs emerge from choir chants, creating the call-and-response structure that is crucial to the album. Like its emblematic cover art, calacuchi is a journey through a dark terrain, and all we have to map out our pilgrimage are children’s oil pastels, but that’s just enough to give form to these gentle specters all around us."
