"Two albums, slightly touched...

'Ke Ala Ke Kua'

A flashback to july 2010, when I created this afterimage in the timespan of more or less one week. An afterimage of paying a visit to Joan Ocean’s hotspot, the Kealakekua Bay, and to islands of Hawai’i and Oahu. Miss Ocean wrote a few books about her communing and having conversations with dolphins at Kealakekua, thus i took upon this trip to investigate this conceptual world building idea.

'Canto Arquipélago'

Recorded under a volcano on a portable fourtrack and computer during a few days in november 2011. In our then temporary island home on Pico island between the avocado trees, the bush and the cliffs. Storms, humidity, ocean, warmth, sunrays, lava, bush, green, blue, ourselves, fishermen, villages, village cafés, cetaceans, livestock smells, ...

Canto was meant as an historical correction - or lesser pedantic, an addendum for the many idyllic insular albums out there. It was also the closing full album of the Dolphins Into The Future era

The music on this cassette is presented in its original audio quality. Although perfectly mastered, it suffers from lo-fi sound quality and is basically monophonic. I decided to keep it this way and to see the songs as historical remnants. Fully realizing a 10 year timespan isn’t even that historical… On two occasions I couldn’t resist and changed small parts to make the music conceptually just. Rest assured I did leave many flaws and little mistakes untouched; since the beauty of a truth is shining through its flaws. "

After a long period of being an autonomous and matriarchal society, it nowadays belongs to South Korea. Women play an important role on the island and enjoy a special status. This matriarchal tradition among other things manifestates in the culture of the legendary Haenyeo – female divers for shellfish, octopus, fish et al. Two years ago Setaik Yim invited Christophe Piette; a Brussels based actor, filmmaker, - connaisseur and musical improviser; to the island to film the paintings of Myonghi, a South Korean visual artist that paints beautiful works exploring the hidden dimensions within nature. Her work is much loved both inside and outside the artworld.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eNext to his 8mm and 16mm cameras, Christophe Piette brought with him a handheld Olympus sound recorder that he used as a sort of 'travel log' and expanded a film beyond the screen. With his particular ear (and eye) for detail and humanity, he registers an organic sound world in six chapters. Creating a Deep Listening experience where normal everyday sounds receive mystical connotations. In this film, a dramatic story unfolds to the backdrop of Mount Fogo (lit. Fire Mountain), an active volcano in Cabo Verde. This volcano is a classic ‘absent’ personage that is abundantly present. There’s not necessarily anthropomorphism at play, but one surely feels a manifestation and a devastating influence throughout the whole of the movie. A hissing and seductive presence. During the course of Christophe Piette's album we hear the dormant volcano Mount Hallasan (lit. high enough to haul the universe), Jeju’s centre and origin. The inhabitants of Jeju believe this mountain has mystical qualities and that it is the dwelling place of Gods and spirits. The mountain is also the core of Jeju’s ecology and its presence is heard all over the island and throughout this collection of composed sound.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBeing fond of the volcanic island myself, I love how the impressions we hear on this album perfectly constitute that specific small world. A world that’s equally tragic, problematic, and balanced. Something else coming to mind is Walter Marchetti’s Perpetuum Mobile (1981), a 'serenade' of a motorway in dialogue with a pond of frogs. Christophe Piette shares a similar attention for the everyday sound, where a passing truck, a random conversation, indeed frogs croaking, a dinner conversation, airport atmospheres, a bus ride, light restaurant jazz, and a band practice by the people of Doksu village are all having their status inside a certain reality; a reality that is now preserved for eternity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn my personal trade, and in the development of the Edições CN catalogue, Christophe Piette was and is of great influence. His concepts enter my mind quiet regularly, and live on in the many books, films, drinks and music he recommends me to explore. After a long period of being an autonomous and matriarchal society, it nowadays belongs to South Korea. Women play an important role on the island and enjoy a special status. This matriarchal tradition among other things manifestates in the culture of the legendary Haenyeo – female divers for shellfish, octopus, fish et al. Two years ago Setaik Yim invited Christophe Piette; a Brussels based actor, filmmaker, - connaisseur and musical improviser; to the island to film the paintings of Myonghi, a South Korean visual artist that paints beautiful works exploring the hidden dimensions within nature. In this film, a dramatic story unfolds to the backdrop of Mount Fogo (lit. Fire Mountain), an active volcano in Cabo Verde. This volcano is a classic ‘absent’ personage that is abundantly present. There’s not necessarily anthropomorphism at play, but one surely feels a manifestation and a devastating influence throughout the whole of the movie. A hissing and seductive presence. During the course of Christophe Piette's album we hear the dormant volcano Mount Hallasan (lit. high enough to haul the universe), Jeju’s centre and origin. The inhabitants of Jeju believe this mountain has mystical qualities and that it is the dwelling place of Gods and spirits. The mountain is also the core of Jeju’s ecology and its presence is heard all over the island and throughout this collection of composed sound.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBeing fond of the volcanic island myself, I love how the impressions we hear on this album perfectly constitute that specific small world. A world that’s equally tragic, problematic, and balanced. Something else coming to mind is Walter Marchetti’s Perpetuum Mobile (1981), a 'serenade' of a motorway in dialogue with a pond of frogs. Christophe Piette shares a similar attention for the everyday sound, where a passing truck, a random conversation, indeed frogs croaking, a dinner conversation, airport atmospheres, a bus ride, light restaurant jazz, and a band practice by the people of Doksu village are all having their status inside a certain reality; a reality that is now preserved for eternity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn my personal trade, and in the development of the Edições CN catalogue, Christophe Piette was and is of great influence. Yet while the champion of hyperrealism, Noah Creshevsky, describes his music as being written in a language we already understand (realism) yet in an exaggerated manner (hyper) - I have to add that things on this album do not sound exaggerated at all. Moreover, i have the feeling that somehow on this work, Jan is trying to underwhelm us. In the best possible way. Because clouds float trough and dissolve. Thus instead of hyperrealism, is Jan maybe speaking to us in a certain Serenerealism? Listening to Halki pilvien makes time non-directional. The music seems to be designed to be played over and over again. This music has no direct impact like one can experience at a punk show, or at a classical music concert. This music is not that one\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e gigantic raincloud covering the world dark. Quite the opposite, it is a pattern of clouds and clearings, floating over the lands. Trough this music a shadow play appears.
