The two improvisers first met in New York at a concert in 2012 and then later reconnected in Argentina in 2017. Eventually, the two improvisers resolved to play together and a plan to record materialized quickly and organically. Javier is the founder and director of RUIDO experimental music festival since its inception in 2017. Dunkelman is known for her versatile and unique techniques, and use of electronics to access a sonic pallet not found in acoustic percussion. In addition to solo performances, Dunkelman performs with Pulitzer Award-winning composer Du Yun, Balún, Emily Wells, Grammy Award-Winning Attacca Quartet, Ali Sethi, and her percussion duo Nomon with her sister Nava. Born and raised in Tokyo to an Indonesian mother and an American father, Dunkelman became a multi-instrumentalist performing alongside her mother. Dunkelman became increasingly active in the alternative music scene as a member of the band Xiu Xiu, touring the world for 6 years. With countless releases cataloged by a literal who's who in the field, (cassettes, CDrs and records on American Tapes, Troniks, New Forces, Oxen, Torn Light, Nashazphone and of course - there was a split 7\" w\/ Tiger Hatchery on Gilgongo), the duo of Jon Lorenz and John Rich occasionally expand their scathing, feedback-saturated reed work into a full ensemble. Here, as a 7 piece group including Dylan Posa (guitar), Edward Ricart (bass), Matthew Reis (electronics), Ryan Jewell (percussion), and Brett Nagafuchi (percussion), there are textures and fractured forms throughout this high-volume chaos which calls to mind the work of Hijokaidan, as broadcast through Borbetomagus. Records), which was written and recorded over 1-1.5 yrs, Recall the Dream Breath was written and recorded within the span of 2 weeks in March 2021. Heart Music was written in quarantine more or less, so that album became very dense as I wasn't too concerned with thinking about how to perform it live. I really wanted to strip things down for Recall and to see if I could similarly create thoughtful and inviting worlds for the listener, but with a more simple sound palette (pedal steel, drums, bass, banjo for the most part). After the careful deliberations and constructions of Heart Music, this album somehow felt freer and looser (more like 1st idea is the best idea). The first two tracks are more thoroughly \"composed\" pieces and for me, highlight new approaches for how I am writing music for the pedal steel. The 2nd half of \"Lorraine's\" and the final three songs were more or less improvised\/written while recording. So I kind of hear the album in this sorta reflective way, Side A \u0026amp; B of similar palettes, but with some different intentions behind them. The other kicker with this album is the collaborations with fellow Moone artists Kyle Field \u0026amp; John Dieterich, two people I have looked up to for a while. Continuing in his signature vein of jazz-tinged, “live-band ambient” work with releases on Geographic North and Soda Gong, this record sidesteps his previous urban nocturnes and instead presents the listener with music made for solitary, homebound introspection. It's daylit and stalled, plateaued and simply present. It's like the abstracted sounds of peripheral conversation, like laying awake and hearing the neighbours' television in an adjacent room.
