そうした音楽がもたらす不穏な余韻の中で、『CULTurally』は、流用された楽曲と再訪された記憶を紡ぎ出す。チューリッヒを拠点とする実験的エレクトロニック・デュオPerverts in White Shirts（ナタリー・ドライヤーとデイヴ・フィリップス）によるこの新作アルバムは、無防備でキャッチーなメロディーが織りなす、2時間にわたる「気まずいポップ」の旅路だ。主流の認識の外側にある世界に形作られてきた人々に向けた、ポスト・フリンジのハントロジーである。

物議を醸したカルト集団「チルドレン・オブ・ゴッド」でのナタリーの孤立した育ちをルーツに、このアルバムは同集団の音楽の断片に加え、他の狂信的運動や教祖たちの歌やテキストを引用している。こうした素材を基に、アナーキーで皮肉たっぷりの「Perverts in White Shirts」は、かつてイデオロギーや孤立、教化に染まっていたメロディーや言葉を、変容させ、文脈から切り離し、再構築する。

"Cults have always had their own soundtracks: songs written to win over, to bind, to manipulate, repeated until they settle beneath thought, becoming core belief and identity.

In the disquieting afterlife of such music, CULTurally appropriated songs and revisited memories begins. The new album from Zürich-based experimental electronic duo Perverts in White Shirts (Nathalie Dreier and Dave Phillips) is a two-hour cringe-pop journey of disarming, catchy tunes. A post-fringe hauntology for those shaped by worlds outside mainstream perception.

Rooted in Nathalie’s isolated upbringing in the controversial Children of God cult, the album draws on fragments of this group’s music, alongside songs and texts from other fanatic movements and gurus. Working with this source material, the anarchic, tongue-in-cheek
Perverts in White Shirts transmogrify, decontextualize, and reimagine melodies and words previously steeped in ideology, isolation, and indoctrination.

In doing so, Dreier and Phillips blur the boundaries between belief and manipulation, intimacy and control, and devotion and performativity. This is a journey of confrontation and subversive reclamation seen through a critical social lens, one that folds sincerity into sonic irony, irreverence into raw ache, and emotional immediacy into distortion and unease.

In a world where so many seek truth and community, cultic logic mirrors the structures we inhabit every day: from micro compliance to algorithmic devotion to wellness dogma and moral absolutism. 2021. “I was overthinking releasing music,” devonwho reveals, “but I’ve reached a place of enjoyment with production. Not worried about pressures of having a consistent output. I’m back to making music for fun. I’ve been making this stuff for years and years and something just clicked to release the music. ”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eNew album TV2 (which can be taken to read “transmissions vol. 2”, according to the artist) is a broad and effusive album of quickfire productions, created instinctively with live looping and patch generation, in which sound design is intentionally and expressively prioritised over structural complexity. “I’m not here to make intricate songs,” devonwho writes. “My process is free-form, eyes-closed intuition, moment-to-moment.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOpening single “Hibeams” begins with pluvial arpeggiated synthesis, raining down on grainy pads with colorful prettiness. It\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e progresses in loops as its elements react and respond to each other like differently sized droplet splashes, rhythmic without beats and narrative without complication.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNext, “PM” is softer but still nestled in old VHS detritus that lends a grit and nostalgic sepia to its warped-tapehead melodies. The twin influences of funk and IDM intertwine to form jazzy haze, revealing a hidden musicianship obscured by the subtle simplicity of the track’s structure.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLater, “Jogo” is scattered and urgent, a rare venture over the three minute mark as insistent squarewaves underpin hi-frequency skittering and lush chords. Its rhythms are headspinning, again without beat production, pointing to devonwho’s self-confessed love of arpeggiation (“arps in everything!”), early Warp, and being “an avid tinkerer.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003edevonwho, coming from a background in beatmaking, explains that looping is a “personal and integral listening experience and creative process,” through which the music of TV2 is formed as a unique meeting point of beatless funk, electronic music informed by loops and beatmaking, nods to Madlib, and only the rarest loans from ambient music.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003edevonwho came to prominence following a move from Portland to LA in 2009. He helped found the early beat-scene collective Klipmode, which also comprised Knxwledge, Mndsgn, and Suzi Analog. Then creating ambient music informed by a love of analog synths, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, and the wider IDM scene (a journey set off by the accidental download of Aphex Twin’s notorious Milkman as a Napster-surfing teenager in the 90s), devonwho found himself unfulfilled by the style’s comparatively formless palette and instead turned to his interest in funk to fuel a new creative direction.
