"どうやってここまで来たのかはわからないが、辿り着けて嬉しい。何年も親しくしている人たち（正直に言うと）による、本当に心地よい聴き心地だ。

ビッグ・ダディ・マグストーン（アーロン・スナイダー）の膨大で多様な作品群の大半と同様に、この録音の随所には、リズムやジャンル（実在のものも創作のものも）、そして「態度」によって彩られたユーモアの層が織り込まれている。その間、イアン・ダグラス＝ムーアはデュオをメロディックにリードし、各アイデアを適切なペースで着実に結晶化させていく。どの曲も、実際に「次に何が起こるのか」を知りたくなるような展開を見せる。

そしてこのアルバムは、過度に凝った手法を用いずに驚くほど多くのことを成し遂げている。手元に豊富なツールを持ちながらもやり過ぎない二人のプレイヤー。時にそれは彼らが創り出した特定の世界を駆け抜ける愉快な冒険だ。音楽には独自の重力とわずかに歪んだ論理があり、私は「サイケデリック」や「アヴァンギャルド」という言葉は避ける。まるで別の惑星で音楽を聴いているかのようだ。その惑星では、異常な大気特性ゆえに音が異なる伝わり方をしている。

「ビッグ・ダディのワルツ」は、三拍子の歩調で後退しながら都市景観を探求し、やがてニューヨーク市外にもベルリンにもありそうな、居心地の良い広大な森林へと溶け込んでいく。ただし、暗くなる前に帰路の道を進むのが賢明だろう。

長年親交を深めてきた二人の友人兼共同制作者が交わす会話には、どこか冷たくも心地よい魅力がある。ここで言う「会話」は文字通りの意味だ——「インサイズ」という楽曲のように、実際に言葉が交わされる。熱狂的なまでに激しくぶつかり合う議論は——その内容については各自の解釈に委ねるが——聴く者に一種の衝撃を残す。これがチャーチ・カーの音楽に常に存在する、田園風景を映す鏡の暗部なのだ。私にとってそれは、方向感覚を失い、おそらくハイになりながら——あるいは現在の状況下では過労かもしれない——ラッシュアワーの都会の場所を歩いている時に時々湧き上がる感覚に似ている。今や渦巻く音響の茂みから「教会」という言葉が現れるまで、あなたは目の前の事柄に落ち着きを取り戻す。

このアルバムの核心をなすのは「(church of)」だ。夜行バスの窓から外を眺め、車内を駆け巡る光と影が絶えず移り変わる感覚を捉えている。完全に独自の音楽的牧草地を駆け抜けた正当な冒険にふさわしい結末だ。"

"I’m not sure how we got here but I’m happy we made it. What a genuinely pleasing listen from people whom (full disclosure) I have known quite well for years.

As with most of his extensive and varied oeuvre, Big Daddy Mugglestone (Aaron Snyder) has laced much of the recording with layers of humor inflected by meter, genre (real or invented) and ‘tude. All the while Ian Douglas-Moore leads the duo melodically with steady crystallization of each idea at the appropriate pace. Each song unfolds in a way that actually leaves you wanting to know what will happen.

And hey this album achieves a heckuva lot without overly elaborate means. Two players with a lot of tools at hand that don’t overdo it. At times it’s an entertaining rollick through a specific world they created. The music has its own sense of gravity and a slightly warped logic, I avoid the words psychedelic or avant-garde. Like listening to music on another planet where the sound travels differently because of the unusual atmospheric properties.

“Big Daddy’s Waltz” is a walking-backwards triple-meter exploration of a cityscape melting eventually into a cozy greater woodlands that could be found as easily outside New York City as Berlin. Maybe take the trail back home before dark though.

There’s something coolly delightful about the way these two longtime friends and collaborators converse. By converse I mean it literally: there’s actual talking, as in the piece “Incise”. Dueling until rapt, the discussion— the content of which, take what you will from it—leaves one feeling kind of shaken. This is the dark side of an ever-present countryside looking-glass in Church Car’s music. For me, it’s like the feeling that sometimes emerges while walking disoriented, possibly high—just as possibly overworked in the current climate—moving through certain rush-hour urban locales. Until the word “church” appears from the now-spinning sonic underbrush, bringing you settling back into the matter at hand.

The album’s centerpiece for me is “(church of),” with its ever-shifting sense of looking out a Greyhound window at night with the lights and shadows moving across the vehicle interior. It’s an apt conclusion to a legit escapade through wholly original musical pastures."
