コロナウィルスが猛威をふるった2019年以降、各地の民謡保存会もその活動を停止させ、盆踊りや発表会での披露、練習会までもが中止に追い込まれた。それに伴って、俚謡×エムの民謡発掘リリースも中断を余儀なくされた。「今」の民謡にこだわればこそ、唄が止まったコロナ禍中はリリースも止まらざるを得なかったのだ。2024年、状況は徐々に改善し、コロナ以前から温めていた我々のリリース計画が時を経て遂に実を結んだ。

今回リリースする「ナニャトヤラ」は、岩手県北部と青森の旧南部藩領に跨がった地域に広く伝わる、東北最古といわれる盆踊りだ。「ナニャトヤラ」というワンフレーズをひたすら繰り返すトランシーなこの盆踊りは「謎の歌」として知られ、その由来は諸説ある。有名なものはキリストの墓伝説と共に語られる「ヘブライ語説」だが源流は不明。「田名部おしまこ」「とらじょ様」「天間のみよこ」、更には北海道の代表的民謡である「道南盆唄」など多数の盆踊り唄や仕事唄がこの唄の系譜にあり、東北民謡のファンデーション(基礎)のひとつと言うことができるだろう。

本作は岩手県北部二戸市で活動する二戸市ナニャトヤラ保存会による「ナニャトヤラ」の2002年録音、2015年録音、2023年録音の3バージョンを収録した。この唄に纏わされた「謎の歌」というエキゾチシズムの色眼鏡をワンパンで吹き飛ばす、現場仕様の圧倒的テンション。縦断爆撃のような太鼓と即興で繋がれていく歌詞が鳴り止まない激ヤバな内容となっている。「保存会」を名乗りつつも、力強くナニャトヤラを現代の形にパッタナー(改良・発展)させていく、二戸市ナニャトヤラ保存会は「民謡=古い物語」という固定観念をぶち壊し、コロナ禍を乗り越えて再開した俚謡×エム民謡発掘シリーズの復活第一弾として相応しい。これが現場の音だ!

A tune they’d done just the one time before but under radically different circumstances — a heaving, 600 strong dancefloor for Glasgow’s spirited Counterflows festival. That recording is also coming out now on a double LP via Astral Spirits as Wood Blues — but here they trade the raucous, ragged energy there for something more chiselled and focussed. Traces linger (a perfume) of the spare concentration in Éliane Radigue and Magnus Granberg’s music heard earlier that night.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe also hear two new tunes that appear on record for the first time — the vibrant swing of African Bossa Nova giving way to the zoned in drone of Rooh (The Soul) the following night. Daniel, the acoustic instrumental follow-up to 2022’s Karma Chief label debut, From Anywhere…, expands the world beyond LA’s concrete canyons and overpasses to the bustling, churning sea of life that is Mexico City, to the sparse, rolling landscape of Red Cloud, Nebraska. In each locale, the constant companion was a nylon-stringed acoustic guitar — with a well-traveled history of its own.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“It was my father’s guitar,” recalls Danny Garcia, the man behind the Reverend. “I found out a few years ago that it was my grandfather’s as well.” Ever-present since his childhood, the Mexican acoustic has taken on increased meaning for Garcia with each passing year. Hours upon hours spent playing, traveling, and breathing meaning into its fretboard have made it both a tool and talisman.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“There’s the obvious bloodline and family and link…that link through history,” confides Garcia. “It’s kinda the only family heirloom I have.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOver the last while, all this playing (or “noodling” as Danny puts it) had Reverend Baron chasing a sound — one which belies the guitar’s origins. Dig deeper and you’ll see the bones of Townes Van Zandt and Nick Drake guitar textures as well. While not claiming their virtuosity in his playing, the soul and vulnerability that have become calling cards for the first two Reverend Baron albums complement these influences. There is a warmth in Daniel that takes center stage in these acoustic meditations.
