"Following last year’s ‘Vitriol’ EP and ‘Otider’ album, SSTROM is back on Rösten with ‘Drenched’, 12 tracks for the floor, divided on 3 EPs, each to be released three weeks apart.
SSTROM is the project of Hannes Stenström, once part of Swedish band Slagsmålsklubben, and one half of enigmatic techno duo SHXCXCHCXSH (SHX). SSTROM’s output is explicitly immersive, relying on tense immediacy and spontaneity. The subtle 4x4 pulsations frame vivid narratives, rich layers of texture with lush harmonies surfacing from the warm and alien flow.
On his ‘Otider’ LP SSTROM manifested a sonic diversity relating to his personal experiences and incorporated a diversity of genres and elements ranging from ‘90s rave to hints of minimal synth or outsider house melodic sensibility, yet everything carefully merged into a coherent whole.
On ‘Drenched’ SSTROM concretizes his ideas even further. The EP’s came to life after he broke his computer by spilling a drink on it. It forced him to try out different techniques of composing and recording. With limited ways of working, a more minimalistic form of expression emerged, based on very short but mind-bending harmonic structures and layered pulsations. The process proved to be very creative and resulted in these twelve tracks whose magic will work best on EP format and for the floor, nothing else."

The recordings cover the period between 1989 to 1995, during which time the last of the industries based on the banks of the Port’s higher land closed; there’s something of a ghosted psychogeography of industry past during parts of Within Our Reach, with Schultz’s evocative use of field recordings offering the listener clues as to the\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e ongoing spatial rearrangement of the Port River area.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThroughout Within Our Reach, we hear the interaction of multiple phenomena. The cawing and singing of birds, individual and en masse, broadcasts out over the submerged drone that modern transport ‘gifts’ to the urban soundscape; for example, a rambling human voice, singing the traditional song “Down By The Riverside”, is tangled up in the hum and purr of traffic, and the call of the seagull. The cawing and singing of birds, individual and en masse, broadcasts out over the submerged drone that modern transport ‘gifts’ to the urban soundscape; for example, a rambling human voice, singing the traditional song “Down By The Riverside”, is tangled up in the hum and purr of traffic, and the call of the seagull. But his uncomplicated disinterest in recognition or recording means his music is rarely heard beyond the walls of Adelaide's Elder Hall, where The Firm's annual concert series is presented to a regular audience of 50-100 initiates. This is the first album of his work, played by US born Australian-Iranian pianist Amir Farid.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs a teenager in 1970 Chapman Smith began performing in AZ Music in Sydney with the recently returned Australian assistant to Cardew and Stockhausen, David Ahern, feeding new ideas into the local music scene, and fielding phoned-in performance instructions from La Monte Young for their improvisations at Brett Whiteley's gallery.
