"The enigma that is Aeson Zervas returns with an outstanding plot twist of electro-chaabi street rave abstractions paying homage to his patrilineal Egyptian roots with a rugged, drum-spurred set.

Past meets present on nine swaggering renditions of the fiery Cairene street rave sound shotted by likes of EEK & Islam Chipsy that has emerged in ballistic permutations from the likes of ZULI, 3Phaz and 1127 in recent years. No doubt it’s bang up for it in a way that his preceding album did not hint at, and all the better for it, connecting threads between the deep past and heritage of Mediterranean rim musics that continue to inform and branch into the present.

Plangent horns and microtonal keyboards edge into weirder basslines gnawed by noise. Zervas’ zeroes in on the relationship between Greece and Egypt and the broader Arabic world here, but with a crucial artistic license that prompts him to mess with the aesthetic and find something fresh but timeless in the process, uncannily echoing in parts Actress’ hazed out take on Detroit techno."

Emerging from tweaky, pinprick percussion, a frenetic warehouse-strength belter appears, assembled from anodized hi-bpm rhythms that scrape against looping synth melodies distorted within an inch of their life.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003epopon's production process is instinctive and mostly improvised. She takes field recordings from her environment and uses these textures - sheet metal lacerations or whooshing gusts of wind, for example - to provide a rough backdrop to sounds from her MicroKorg\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e, Native Instruments Maschine, piano and small instruments. Occasionally, she adds her own voice or her niece's, and uses phone and tablet apps to fill in the gaps. Listening to the title track, it's hard to figure out exactly how she wrangles these elements into such tight, cybernetic grooves. Slithering slowly from a resonant bass hit and wrecking ball kicks, it's a cyclic rhythmic roller that wouldn't sound out of place on Batu's Timedance imprint.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLengthy psychedelic closer 'Sokkyooo' flips the script completely, bowling through children's voices with stuttered fractal noise and hypnotic dub techno throbs.
