Nice seeing you again. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eTo record Ease the Work, the crew traveled via ferry with an entire studio’s worth of equipment to an old theater on Peaks Island in Maine, months before the first tourists would show up. The week-long session started with an island-wide power outage that halted recording on the first day, and ended with twelve songs that walk steadily between longing and contentment, sentimentality and subtlety, the lift of harmony and the compulsion of a melody you wish would play forever. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFormed in the flourishing underground of West Philadelphia in the latter half of the 2010s, Hour has fluctuated in size and scope around Cormier-O’Leary’s clear yet open-ended harmonic\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e framework and ambitious ear. Ease the Work builds on the bedrock of Hour’s first two records, Tiny Houses and Anemone Red, and represents the group at its most expansive in sound and membership. Ten musicians, heads from punk, experimental, and classical scenes up and down the east coast, made up the band at Hour’s August ‘23 residency in Queens, New York. The stage wasn’t big enough. The string section had to set up on the floor. Cormier-O’Leary has contributed notably across the landscape of independent music, and Hour is living, breathing, deep listening proof of his community-minded ethos. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHour’s music cuts a broad pathway, and remains hard to classify or compare. Perhaps most at home beside work from Bill Frisell, Eiko Ishibashi, ECM Records, or the Louisville experimental chamber group Rachel’s, Ease the Work shows us life on the boundary of composition and improvisation. It reaches for the sweeping gestures and inspired pacing of classic film scores, Frank Sinatra ballads, and Scott Walker’s pop orchestra. It also retains the arresting intimacy of the band’s early work. Strings swell and harmonize in counterpoint with electric guitar, clarinet, and piano, while drums, synth pads, and field recordings complete the aural world. Cormier-O’Leary says, “it isn’t a soundtrack. If it was, there would be a movie.” Ease the Work might be its own movie. The protagonist walking. A gorgeous day darkening. A cat in the window. The week-long session started with an island-wide power outage that halted recording on the first day, and ended with twelve songs that walk steadily between longing and contentment, sentimentality and subtlety, the lift of harmony and the compulsion of a melody you wish would play forever. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFormed in the flourishing underground of West Philadelphia in the latter half of the 2010s, Hour has fluctuated in size and scope around Cormier-O’Leary’s clear yet open-ended harmonic\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e framework and ambitious ear. Ease the Work builds on the bedrock of Hour’s first two records, Tiny Houses and Anemone Red, and represents the group at its most expansive in sound and membership. Ten musicians, heads from punk, experimental, and classical scenes up and down the east coast, made up the band at Hour’s August ‘23 residency in Queens, New York. The stage wasn’t big enough. The string section had to set up on the floor. Cormier-O’Leary has contributed notably across the landscape of independent music, and Hour is living, breathing, deep listening proof of his community-minded ethos. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHour’s music cuts a broad pathway, and remains hard to classify or compare. Perhaps most at home beside work from Bill Frisell, Eiko Ishibashi, ECM Records, or the Louisville experimental chamber group Rachel’s, Ease the Work shows us life on the boundary of composition and improvisation. It reaches for the sweeping gestures and inspired pacing of classic film scores, Frank Sinatra ballads, and Scott Walker’s pop orchestra. It also retains the arresting intimacy of the band’s early work. Strings swell and harmonize in counterpoint with electric guitar, clarinet, and piano, while drums, synth pads, and field recordings complete the aural world. Cormier-O’Leary says, “it isn’t a soundtrack. If it was, there would be a movie.” Ease the Work might be its own movie. The protagonist walking. A gorgeous day darkening. A cat in the window. I would write all day and then in the evenings I would drive down into the city to practice with my band, and on the drive I’d play back what I’d recorded for the day. I did this drive often enough that it became a ritual, a movie I watched on repeat. It was the same every time, I always left in the afternoon and arrived in the evening. I knew exactly where to change lanes to avoid traffic. I knew where the deer liked to eat on the side of the road. I knew where the cops sat. I knew where people liked to speed, and where I would speed.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe only thing that would change was the narration of whatever was kicking around in my brain for an hour and a half. The predictability of the drive meant my mind could just sprint around like a little dog in a dog park, woom woom woom. It’s my kind of drive. Where you can just get really wrapped up in a conversation with your own personal Charlie Rose. Why does mindfulness seem to attract so many assholes? Why doesn’t it fix them? Systems meant to better people don’t seem to work very well, or for very long at least. People\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e always seem to find a way to smuggle in their fat little sausage fingers to the potluck, in which case, is there any system worth applying our finite energy? But as you get carried off with Charlie Rose, the drive has, over time, developed these landmarks that have accumulated a mental gravity where looking at them makes you think of the same thing every time, and no matter whatever train of thought you were on, you’re suddenly called by the Ski Haus Lodge to think about the steak you had in that place with all the taxidermy. Is it possible to drive by Ski Haus and not think about the taxidermy? No, you must think it every time, just like you have to change lanes before exit 12 or you’ll get stuck when the road merges. The Ski Haus becomes a quotable line of the movie, and rather than try to steer your mind away from the pink moose, you just accept that this part of the drive always has a slight taxidermy flavor. show. For a good portion of that time I was living in the Hudson Valley at a weekend house some friends owned, just writing music mostly. I would write all day and then in the evenings I would drive down into the city to practice with my band, and on the drive I’d play back what I’d recorded for the day. I did this drive often enough that it became a ritual, a movie I watched on repeat. It was the same every time, I always left in the afternoon and arrived in the evening. I knew exactly where to change lanes to avoid traffic. I knew where the deer liked to eat on the side of the road. I knew where the cops sat. I knew where people liked to speed, and where I would speed.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe only thing that would change was the narration of whatever was kicking around in my brain for an hour and a half. The predictability of the drive meant my mind could just sprint around like a little dog in a dog park, woom woom woom. It’s my kind of drive. Where you can just get really wrapped up in a conversation with your own personal Charlie Rose. Why does mindfulness seem to attract so many assholes? Why doesn’t it fix them? Systems meant to better people don’t seem to work very well, or for very long at least. People\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e always seem to find a way to smuggle in their fat little sausage fingers to the potluck, in which case, is there any system worth applying our finite energy? But as you get carried off with Charlie Rose, the drive has, over time, developed these landmarks that have accumulated a mental gravity where looking at them makes you think of the same thing every time, and no matter whatever train of thought you were on, you’re suddenly called by the Ski Haus Lodge to think about the steak you had in that place with all the taxidermy. Is it possible to drive by Ski Haus and not think about the taxidermy? No, you must think it every time, just like you have to change lanes before exit 12 or you’ll get stuck when the road merges. The Ski Haus becomes a quotable line of the movie, and rather than try to steer your mind away from the pink moose, you just accept that this part of the drive always has a slight taxidermy flavor. Humor rubs elbows with heartbreak. Acoustic guitars brush up against synthesizers, cradling Reamer as she sings about the American Chestnut tree extinction, employee gossip at a Day’s Inn, fishing beside a power plant, turf grass farms, and waking up next to day-old take-out. All the while, she collected her own observations like specimens and slowly weaved the songs that would form her debut full-length, ‘Natural Science.’\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eRecorded throughout 2023 by Lucas Knapp, ‘Natural Science’ paints with a full spectrum. Humor rubs elbows with heartbreak. Acoustic guitars brush up against synthesizers, cradling Reamer as she sings about the American Chestnut tree extinction, employee gossip at a Day’s Inn, fishing beside a power plant, turf grass farms, and waking up next to day-old take-out. The indifferent beauty of nature is held up next to the everyday as Reamer does her very best to find clues for navigating the latter by musing upon both.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFollowing the release of her self-produced EP ‘Lucky’ (Dear Life Records) in 2021, Reamer assembled a band with musicians from Philadelphia’s vibrant music community and began working her once solo-acoustic songs into full band arrangements. After a brief\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e flirtation with dance music which led to 2022’s viral single “Touch Tank,” Reamer settled into a sound that lies somewhere in the folk-rock-pop matrix, explored with the humor and lightness of songwriters like Sheryl Crow or Melanie. Reamer reflects: “When I heard the songs with the band, I knew it was time to make the record. It felt like something I had been working towards my whole life. I grew up around musicians but I never thought I was good enough to be in a band or even to make my own music. My grandmother Joan gave me voice lessons after school, my mom was an opera singer, and my dad a guitar player. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized I could do it. It didn’t matter if I could shred on the guitar or something. It was like some illusion shattered.”\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eReamer is a sincere storyteller. His label debut for Dear Life Records is ‘Ghost of Your Guitar Solo,’ a ten-song collection recorded and performed entirely by Lenderman.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe record was written and recorded quickly, songs often being fully constructed and recorded within frenzied single day sessions. Songs were born out of freewheeling jam sessions with his roommates, with Lenderman often freestyling lyrics that would later become the foundations of the finished songs. Inspired by a writing exercise conceived by the late David Berman, Lenderman would write 20 disconnected lines a day, scrapping most of them but preserving a few to be used later. This process aided in what became an extremely prolific writing period for the artist this past spring.
