"Multidisciplinary Brussels-based artist Sagat steps up with a new mini album on the Basic Moves side label, Gems Under The Horizon, featuring a remix by Slovenian ambient bird e/tape. A few years ago, Wiet Lengeler, aka Sagat was invited by Basic Moves to create a live visual show using an analogue video synth setup to accompany a 5-hour dj set by e/tape at Face B in Brussels. From that moment on, the synchronicity between the two artists was clear - and this EP is the result.
Besides his visual work, Wiet Lengeler is also known for his contemporary techno music, primarily released on Brussels’ cult label Vlek Recordings. For this mini-album, Gems Under The Horizon 003, he presents four grainy ambient and textured electro-acoustic explorations. The tracks unfold organically — like ivy — gradually revealing layers of sound and hidden textures beneath babbling streams of electronics. e/tape’s remix feels like a natural continuation of Sagat’s sonic universe, together forming a mesmerising whole that explores the fringes of ambient music. In addition to the release, a limited run of the release + 30 x 3 riso printed posters from the visual show at Face B, made by Sagat and hand numbered are made available.
Mastering and lacquer cut was done by Frederic Alstadt at Angstrom Mastering. Artwork & inserts are designed by renowned Ghent-based visual artist Dieter Durinck."

Over the last several years, we have been interested in expanding very small fragments of these discreet pieces of audio into long-form compositions. This process has resulted in a new approach to how we build tracks from the ground up. In this particular workflow, one of us is largely responsible for supplying the main cache of sounds, and the other is responsible for the processing and sequencing of those sounds.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs we developed this kind of working relationship, the nature of the material has ventured into a palette that is more electronic. This is perhaps a result of the \"collage\" aspect of how the audio is arranged inside of a digital environment, as well as our continued discovery and use of new digital processing tools. We are constantly attempting to extract as much as possible out of an initial collection of audio, which typically includes field recordings, synthesis experiments, bits of acoustic instrumentation, and found sounds. In many instances the original sounds are manipulated far beyond their\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e recognizable characteristics, which creates new and unexpected results.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWe also share a great personal interest in utilizing sounds with different levels of fidelity, as we both enjoy the unique traits inherent in various recording formats. The artifacts and destructive compression of antiquated digital recorders, and the pristine qualities of modern studio technology both contain, in different ways, our own intimate relationships to such devices and spaces. We believe this is reflective of how we associate and remember sound, which is through the peripherals of its delivery. In the context of Cleared, this interest is pursued to further the poetic and gestural features of our music, and to create records that are infused with visual imagery, memory, and the physical environments in which we find inspiration.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLustres is the most detailed and refined output of our studio practice using this method of exchanging sound material. The four tracks present a mood that, for us, is indicative of a kind of rolling celestial atmosphere. Simultaneously, there exists both a subterranean and starlit quality about the music. To us, it is not unlike the imagined terrain of a distant meteor or orbiting asteroid, alternating between the extremes of light and temperature as its path is slowly carved in a dark vacuum. It is music for contemplation and quiet reflection, as these are the states of listening we have come to greatly appreciate in our personal lives, and as the space in which we are most happy to have our music experienced. Carl Stone and Asuna performed together for the first time at an international experimental music festival held in Kanazawa city, where Asuna lives. Carl Stone is a pioneering composer of computer sampled music. and ASUNA known for its “100 Keyboards” performance, played in this duo with over 100 toy instruments, samplers, and synthesizers. Carl samples and processed the sound of Asuna's various toys in real time. Asuna then incorporates the sounds into her own sampler and sends again the signal to Carl. The two transformed the sounds on the live show, music born mysteryous cultural parade of toys was stirred up by the electronic sounds, melting one into the other. They then on to record in the studio, Tokyo.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFor the studio recordings, we used the same methodologies, but pushed ourselves in new directions to give the strength that would be record stuff. ASUNA then edited the song based on ideas that were in the opposite direction to the way the two performed on the recording.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"Sampling\" comes from the ancient Latin \"exemplum,\" which means the act of juxtaposing something taken from measurement or observation, and it is self-evident that a sample is made\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e because of an object. However, as music is an art of time, the editing was done in such a way that the relationship between the sample and the object is reversed. In other words, Carl's sample and the editing of the target sound made of electronic sounds are placed before ASUNA's sound, and the original sound is placed after it (except \"Casual Resonant\"). I remember pouring over 14th century art, utilizing unauthorized library passes, and being witness to the trajectories of two individuals on divergent but somehow-crossing timelines. Originally recorded in 2007-2009 (?) by Danielle Baquet\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e and Will Long, with backpacked gear, garage photography, sleepless nights and skipped work. I brought the tape and made the loops, she brought the laptop and the pen and paper.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTry to look at it like this. Recorded in stereo, then split into two tracks for each left and right channel, reversing one side and adding reverse reverb, and the other long reverb and then reversing. Making each stereo again, then putting back together and blending each left and right together to make a stereo track again. This was an age of hybrid experiments between analog tape loops and digital processing, to render a new path, for better or worse. I remember pouring over 14th century art, utilizing unauthorized library passes, and being witness to the trajectories of two individuals on divergent but somehow-crossing timelines.
