Released on Friends of Friends, A Free Mind is a masterpiece from by a producer and multi-instrumentalist (keys, drum machine, live bass, guitar, percussion) who discovered a secret chamber where digital funk, contemporary soul, the Belleville Three and Mr. Fingers can all convene on the dancefloor. The L.A. linchpin has alchemized original grooves made to hear on loop at an elegant Tokyo vinyl den, booming from your car speakers on a moon-lit freeway run, or at a bacchanalian house party. It works as both pure aesthetics and function–all gorgeous chord progressions and graceful locomotion – yet it’s sophisticated and complex, informed by the history of the last four decades of music. Unfortunately, he has significantly declined since then.

This reality seeps into the cracks of Running with Scissors, particularly in the title track, where the act of "running" mirrors the frantic, Sisyphean effort to preserve memories that slip like sand. The scissors—sharp, precarious—become a metaphor for the duality of love and loss: the careful tenderness of holding someone’s fading story, and the guilt of wondering if you’re cutting away parts of yourself in the process. The album doesn’t just explore grief in the abstract; it documents the daily ache of watching a loved one dissolve, while still grasping for the fleeting moments of recognition. This time around, the tempo has picked up and we're treated to some vintage soul drenched house tunes.

"The Road to Love" steps up the dance with an infectious piano and bass line combination, alongside catchy vocals from an anonymous legendary singer. It's a hard hitting groovy house number dealing with finding the strength to love again after all that we've been through in the last year. "Yves Klein Blue" is a Lo Fi jazz tinged instrumental hip hop number with hard hitting drums and a dusty soul aesthetic. Late night drives through hazy Los Angeles streets. "

Artist : Sweatson Klank

Label : Friends of Friends Music
"}
