"Full Spectrum Records presents a new major work from Daniel James Burke’s long-running Illusion Of Safety project: ‘Float.’
Since 1983, Burke and his [many] co-conspirators have used the IOS vehicle as a means to traverse most every facet of the avant sound plane, from industrial pop deconstructions to blindingly minimal sound art to surrealist fogs of found-sound collage and beyond. Over the course of 40+ full-length releases, IOS has bent the possibilities of these sonic realms and reconstituted them into an aesthetic constellation that stands apart in its own darkly beautiful corner of the sky.
The latest of these works, ‘Float,’ is a distinctly solo endeavor on Burke’s part, taking as its starting point an appreciation of water in all its forms: liquid, vapor, and solid. A loving homage to the magic stuff that gives life to our imperiled garden planet and ourselves, the pure sound of water runs throughout the album, transformed via sampling, granular synthesis, and other various processes to become something perhaps less pure. Rounded out with additional sonic material – pianos, electronics, and the like – the program seeks to both transcend and immerse itself in the moment while bathing in the source material of our being.
“Water is something I have had an ongoing personal relationship to outside of my body since I was very young,” observes Burke. “I was always in water, swimming and later scuba diving, always fascinated not only by the feel of it…but also the sound of it: wave, flow, bubble, crackle, and hiss. Much later, I learned to love drinking it.”
Composed over the course of six months during the summer and fall of 2023, ‘Float’ was initially conceived for presentation on the famed CLEAT 16 multichannel system at Elastic Arts Chicago. Burke also crafted an accompanying video for the performance. Largely composed from water and water-related images created by himself, in addition to a trove of Creative Commons material from Pexels, NASA, and the Prelinger Archives, it is a hypnotic visual that revels in water’s pure sensuality.
The version of ‘Float’ that we are sharing now with you is a mere stereo mixdown, but the music has lost none of its sonic heft or vitality in the process."
