He has released more than a dozen albums\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e under his own name, mostly with the exceptional label Rune Grammofon. He has been part of projects by Christian Wallumrød, Trygve Seim and Trio Mediæval, among others, which found a home at ECM. In a quiet house in Dakar, one guitarist pushes an acoustic guitar in the hands of another. It was a small Eastern European instrument with special nylon strings, bought for little money in a Brussels music store. Pierre Van Dormael had purchased several before traveling to Senegal, for his students at the Conservatory of Dakar. The other musician: Karl Van Deun. He spent his vacation in West-Africa, with his comrade and teacher.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eDuring one of those clammy African nights Pierre suggested to make some music. With nothing more than that small guitar, Karl played what came to him, intuitively and without preparation. The new quartet is rounded out with a pair of distinctive guitarists, long-time Belgian collaborator Frederik Leroux—Machtelinckx’s partner in the tender duo project Poor Isa—and the Berlin-based Norwegian Fredrik Rasten, a more recent creative partner with whom he also maintains a duo.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003e“What remains is the choice of acoustic and fragile sounds, comprehensible to the listener but with an undercurrent of tension and complexity,” says Machtelinckx. “What is new is the intertwining of acoustic guitars. The melodic voice is exchanged for yet another stringed instrument, resulting in a group sound in which individuals are barely distinguishable. The classical roles of an ensemble are abandoned: the three guitars weave a web in which the percussion moves freely.
