First released on September 6, 2006, the eight-track album established a musical language that Sullivan would continue to explore and refine for the next two decades: slowly unfolding electronics, treated guitar, soft rhythmic movement and melody shaped less by conventional structure than by memory, atmosphere and emotional association.

What is perhaps most striking about the album now is how little it feels attached to 2006. There are recognizable traces of the period, particularly in its intersection of ambient music, post-rock and understated electronic production, but The Sound Of Lights When Dim has never depended on those associations. Its strength lies instead in Sullivan’s restraint. Sounds arrive, linger and disappear without being forced toward a climax. Guitar lines emerge from beds of organ and synthesizer, small electronic rhythms flicker underneath, and melodies are given enough room to feel as though they are being remembered rather than performed.

That quality was apparent from the beginning. Sputnikmusic’s 2007 review described Sullivan as a musician who understood restraint particularly well, recognizing when to guide a composition forward and when to allow it to recede again. The review singled out “How Life Was Meant To Be Lived,” where slide guitar and electronic programming meet without either overwhelming the other, ultimately calling the record a “perfect piece of emotional ambience; a masterpiece.”

The album opens quietly with “Be There,” its reverberating guitar suspended inside broad, slowly shifting tones. “Radiance” follows with acoustic guitar and distant rhythmic details moving through a much larger field of sound. By “The Delicate Sound Of Silence,” Sullivan is working almost impressionistically: reversed guitar, blurred vocal traces, soft keys and washes of texture appear and vanish before they can fully resolve. Cyclic Defrost later described the album as an “ocean of warm, endless reflection,” noting the way its synths, organs and acoustic and electric guitars seem to dissolve into one another.

The titles themselves provide part of the emotional architecture. “A Song That Will Help You Remember To Forget,” “The Warm Familiar Smell Of September,” “West Of 4th (Kristina’s Song),” “How Life Was Meant To Be Lived” and “Lonesome Sentiment” suggest memories whose meaning is never completely disclosed. Sullivan does not explain them through words. Instead, the music occupies the space surrounding those memories: the colors, places, distances and small sensory details that remain after the circumstances themselves have begun to disappear.

This relationship between sound and memory would eventually become one of Slow Dancing Society’s defining characteristics. Looking back on Sullivan’s work, textura has repeatedly returned to ideas of nostalgia and lost personal landscapes. The publication included The Sound Of Lights When Dim among its notable albums of 2007, describing piano, organ and guitar moving in “rapturous slow motion,” and years later characterized Sullivan’s broader catalogue as a trademark blend of electronics, keyboards and electric guitar.

The record also contains an unusual degree of musical warmth. “The Warm Familiar Smell Of September” introduces a subdued beat beneath acoustic guitar, while “West Of 4th” allows organ, electric piano and sparse guitar to move at an almost suspended pace. The long-form “How Life Was Meant To Be Lived” is its emotional center, slowly expanding through slide guitar, chimes, piano and degraded electronic rhythm before receding again. “Lonesome Sentiment” closes the album without trying to summarize it, leaving the listener in much the same suspended state in which the record began. Cyclic Defrost compared its final fade to the sun setting over “happy memories,” an image that seems appropriate for Sullivan’s music..."

And perhaps that was always the First released on September 6, 2006, the eight-track album established a musical language that Sullivan would continue to explore and refine for the next two decades: slowly unfolding electronics, treated guitar, soft rhythmic movement and melody shaped less by conventional structure than by memory, atmosphere and emotional association.

And perhaps that was always the point."

Artist : Slow Dancing Society

Label : Past Inside The Present

cat no : PITP85

Release date : 2026 (reissue)
"}
