"It's been five years since Vancouver instrumentalist Keith Freeman's previous release on Hotham Sound (2015's Post Politica), so we weren't quite sure what to expect when he told us a new Khyex full length was in the works. What arrived was a deeply personal concept album that surpassed our expectations and expanded our admiration for Freeman as an artist and musician. Like its predecessor, Sparrowing is built on a foundation of fragile acoustic guitar motifs that follow one after another like melodic haikus. But woven over top these familiar elements is an ethereal ensemble of electronic choirs, arpeggios and vocal samples that sound like nothing the artist has done before. The result is an album that feels intensely private and hermetic - like a series of lo-fi sacred hymns to the natural world.

The album's title is a reference to the song of the White Throated Sparrow, a bird that recently changed its song for the first time in known history. Already preoccupied with the harmful aural and physical effects of humanity on the planet, and struck by the way the sparrow's slowly morphing song seemed to mirror his own shifting melodies, Freeman allowed the bird's theme to seep slowly into the fabric of the album; eventually going so far as to sample it directly for the title track."
