"12k is very happy to help usher in the return of Ezekiel Honig, a New York City-based artist and founder of both the Anticipate Recordings and Microcosm labels, which have released music from Sawako, Nicola Ratti and Mark Templeton, among others, throughout the 2000s.

Honig returns with Unmapping the Distance Keeps Getting Closer, an album of very stark, and often dark and vulnerable music. Honig describes the work in the context of the feeling of listening while walking through the city, and then the forest. While this seems like a placid activity, there is definitely an air of unease, created by distorted and fragmented sounds. Piano, horns and broken rhythms make up the sonic palette; however these don’t present themselves with clarity and definition, but rather are hinted at by the pulling apart and reconstruction of spectral elements. The sonic origins... analog, digital, acoustic, are unclear. Unmapping, remapping, and unexpected.

Throughout his discography, Honig has often made use of field recordings as a strong narrative within his musical composition. He uses these to evoke a sense of place, either abstractly for mood or as an intentional, conceptual connection to the theme of the work. Unmapping keeps this tradition and does so with a more textural and tactile motive. Place is strong on this album, but the location is unknown and the journey melancholic, if a bit hopeful, as if there is a destination sought."

Having become aquainted through their shared love of music technology, Uwe Zahn (Arovane) and Taylor Deupree only found it natural to work on a project together based around one of their favorite synthesizers. As Zahn recalls:\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“After a long email conversation, Taylor and I came up with the idea of recording an album only with sound sources from the Nonlinear Labs C15 synthesizer that we both own. The first sketches were made with an exchanging of C15 patches and a constantly growing shared sound pool that led to the structure of the first songs. Prefering to work in person, but hampered by the pandemic, we resorted to sending projects back and forth. and developed an organic method that inspired and excited us.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt was very exciting to see how Taylor’s skills in the field of mixing combined with my experience in sound design. We both share a love of experimentation, gave each other very free rein in manipulating each other’s sounds. Most of the tracks are based on improvisations, loops and many layers of sounds processed in our studios. Distilling the rich sounds down to their most important textures and forms and creating many layers of processed and re-processed sounds all embued with their love of synthesis and sound exploration. Arovane’s dense textural beds of tone and harmony lay the foundation for the more broken and fragile melodics of Deupree’s organic loops. While the preceding album was an examination of reclusiveness, this body of work is focused on the longer term effect of that isolation. Much of this material was produced from a new studio location, with an outlook from a second floor window.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBissonnette teased out subtle melancholic strains and implemented an increasingly reductive approach to the compositions. Despite a meticulous attention to detail on the final tracks, serendipitous moments were left intact, accidental fragments adding a sense of uneasiness to the mix. The sonics live in an environment caught between beauty and decay. A sense of wistfulness prevails among the typically graceful sounding instruments – piano tones, tines, pads – cast in a light of introspection and restlessness.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs a complimentary element, Bissonnette invited MA|DE, the joint authorship of Mark Laliberte and Jade Wallace, to respond to selected tracks with poems that reflect their perception of the work. These appear in a booklet included with the CD. Likewise, the accompanying photography reflects the partnership between the audio and the writing producing a third component, a visual manifestation of the work. While the preceding album was an examination of reclusiveness, this body of work is focused on the longer term effect of that isolation. Much of this material was produced from a new studio location, with an outlook from a second floor window.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBissonnette teased out subtle melancholic strains and implemented an increasingly reductive approach to the compositions. Despite a meticulous attention to detail on the final tracks, serendipitous moments were left intact, accidental fragments adding a sense of uneasiness to the mix. The sonics live in an environment caught between beauty and decay.
