"If you’ve been aware of Asheville, NC, artist Ross Gentry’s career over the past 15-plus years, his choosing “Observance” as a moniker won’t raise an eyebrow. Gentry’s music is deep and immersive, and a defining characteristic of it all, from the yawning drones of Villages to the overcast electro-acoustic wanderings under his own name, is a willingness to let sounds slowly uncurl at their own pace. Gentry seems more like a shepherd than a composer, organizing each element of his shimmering soundscapes, then stepping back and letting them interact as they will. With Observance, he’s still adept at building ornamented worlds, now using dub techno as their blueprint.

The songs on eviscerating abundance feel like sitting still, blending into the surroundings, and taking stock of all that’s happening. Each hinges on a single vantage point—a kick drum pulse, a sweeping synth drone, a ticking hi-hat—staying static as waves of instrumentation, both organic and electronic, swell, crash, and repeat. Gentry is a master of the slow-burn build, gradually introducing elements in a way that becomes your attention rather than commanding it."
