"Probing is a project exploring specific missing persons cases that are of serious interest to me. The first tape, for Trust Collective, "Missing in Centre County", was about the disappearance of Ray Gricar in Pennsylvania.
This case was appealing due to its connections with Penn State and the Sandusky case, an unfortunate parallel to my past. Just last year in the spring on a trip to Pennsylvania I was able to drive a stretch of the highway Ray last drove on before his abandoned car was found.
This next release, "Missing in Grafton County", is focused on Maura Murray. This case made waves specifically around New England, where I live. I remember watching new segments on it as a young teenager, and even hearing my parents talk about it with friends at a party once. It has always mystified me. I have driven the final route she took from Amherst, MA to Woodsville, NH more times than I can count. I specifically made this trip regularly after being asked to do a tape for AAD. I knew it had to be about her. On these occasions, I began taking field recordings while on this drive, and collecting objects like metal, wood, glass, cans, etc. from spots along the drive, as well as the accident site in Woodsville where she was last seen.
The A side is comprised of a lot of different things, but there is a heavy use of these objects in many different ways; alongside many tapes and pedals. The B side is my favorite live rehearsal from the several that I have recorded. I did a bunch throughout the day of February 9, 2024, which was the 20th anniversary of Maura’s disappearance. I had many other rehearsals from other days in the weeks surrounding, but I feel especially happy that the session I liked the most is from that particular day. What you hear in that rehearsal is a junk session with all of the collected materials, amplified and assaulted, recorded straight to tape, no edits or anything of the like."
