Both films convey love and death as both direct opposites and kindred concepts, turning to cryptic surrealism, poetic hallucinations and flickering alternations between flesh and ecstatic abstraction. Opéra Mort’s sonic accompaniment is a squirming contradiction, fraught with micro-harmonic friction and bleeps of electronic alarm. Is the soundscape melding into a solitary whole or blowing itself apart?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWith ‘Film Works’, the duo have adapted their soundtrack into a standalone recorded work. Synthesisers flicker like computers trapped inside calculative loops. Flailing organs knot into tendrils of microphone feedback. Occasionally it’s possible to identify traces of body and voice within the wretched lattice – resting-state heartbeats, regulatory beeps of life support – which are only ever faintly present within Opéra Mort’s transcendent elsewhere, like echoes humming through the membrane between the corporeal world and the heights of ecstasy. Side A was recorded back in 2012 and originally released under his Ornaments alias, manifesting as the withered, rain-eroded memory of a majestic orchestral lament, with bowed cymbals singing through layers of rust and the sound of children floating in through an open window. It was this 20-minute piece that inspired us to present Gustafsson with the conceptual framework for Nattmusik, through which he explored the cyclical symbiosis of humanity and nature. The four movements of side B were captured in winter 2018 as an elaboration on these themes, with pianos and loops tumbling into thickets of crumpled, perishing cassette. As a collection, these pieces frame Nattmusik as an absent point of origin; its reverberations are smeared across both the future and the past, yet the source sound is palpably missing. The compositional practice developed by the duo is strict, bearing the marks of tension informed by the rigor of live performance. The pieces on Kithless are documents of this practice; Drift Gently Down the Frigid Tides of Sleep was recorded live at 'Activating the Medium XIII:ICE' in San Francisco on April 17, 2010. The performance extends the use of hybrid and musique concrete forms by engaging with the physical limits of the body through voluntary hypothermia, transforming the performers state and relationship to compositional tools. I wanted to take back the value of nostalgia as something real, something personal - something I think I evoked vividly through the earliest SM recordings. I realized that this meant facing the crossroads of the time present and past. Not only to stray way from the cheapening of memories as a \"80s\/90s kid\" gimmick but facing the realities of time, cherishing the present while acknowledging our personal history as human instead of pieces of pop culture anecdotes. For once it felt acceptable to use symbolism in the practices of creation, and as such I began utilizing the process of sampling - something I rarely did in SM - and finding pieces from different sources that somehow fit and spoke to each other, harmonizing to create something that looked ahead with optimism. This meant using a combination processed samples of two sources: one \"contemporary\" and one \"old\", preferably from the era I was a young child at. What you are hearing are processed pieces of things that include significant sounds of the late 80s \/ very early 90s era - japanese mecha robot \/ classic anime theme songs, instrumental sections of indonesian pop hits, etc - against samples from the past 5 years - my daughter's violin playing, pieces of my own music, other's musical movements - shifting and intertwining with each other. Making sure they ere harmonious was somehow less an issue than I had imagined. It feels right and somehow joyful in its own way even if it glimmers with melancholy memories. Three aged personal recordings from 2008, 2009, and 2010 are also poured in the batter: a bedroom violin trio, ambient music, and a sad plucked guitar piece. Currently working on her PhD in Musicology at UCLA, her trajectory has been unorthodox. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, which, if you’ve never been there, doesn’t really scream “Avant-Garde” (Calgary is the rodeo capital of the world).\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eFrom a young age, Sarah was a driven pianist (and figure-skater, although that’s a story for a different time). It is important and interesting that she chose to study esoteric music; as Sarah could have easily been a cowgirl or a concert pianist had her ingrained love of synthesis and sonic phenomenology not taken the wheel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eSarah is a considered person. I find few people that have the diligence and resolve to\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003etake their time\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewith music… especially in a live context.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eI respect that about her.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThe first time I saw Sarah perform, I presumptuously told her that her music reminded me of my favorite Mirror albums (the exceptional project of Andrew Chalk and Christoph Heemann).\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eSarah was not familiar with Mirror, so the compliment was initially lost on her.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eYears back I was in the same situation when a review compared my music to Andrew Chalk, who was unknown to me at the time.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eSo I felt a kinship in our magnetic drift towards unspoken and clustered beauty.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eLet Night Come On Bells End The Day\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003efollows the release of her “sound-wheel” LP\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eAll My Circles Run,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003ewhich examines the isolation of different instruments\u003ci\u003e.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eLet Night Come On…,\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erecorded mainly with a Mellotron and electronic organ,\u003ci\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003efeels like a return to the nest.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eBurrowed in the studio, Davachi was the only performer on this album.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eShe both splays her compositional architecture and re-contextualizes the essence of her early output.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eShe chiseled careful and shadowed hymns; anchors of emotion.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eTwo pillars of this album are “Mordents”, which to my ears drops hints of her love for Progressive rock music – and “Buhrstone,” comparable to a sombre funeral march of piano and flutes. These two examine punctuations of early music, gently plucking melodies and movements.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThe three other compositions are tonal works, blowing slow jets of lapping harmonics.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eWriting this description now, I find it hard to separate “At Hand” from filmmaker Paul Clipson, who made a melancholic film for this piece of Sarah’s.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eA fitting title for Sarah and Paul’s relationship – frequently working in orbit of each other, meticulous and tactile.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eI cherish this track as a memory of Paul.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eThis is a lovely album to fill an evening living room with. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, which, if you’ve never been there, doesn’t really scream “Avant-Garde” (Calgary is the rodeo capital of the world).\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eFrom a young age, Sarah was a driven pianist (and figure-skater, although that’s a story for a different time). It is important and interesting that she chose to study esoteric music; as Sarah could have easily been a cowgirl or a concert pianist had her ingrained love of synthesis and sonic phenomenology not taken the wheel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003eSarah is a considered person.
