It had been a few years since I owned a guitar and I started getting an itch to play one again. I bought a classical guitar as well as a handful of different\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e flutes when we got back to Brooklyn. ‘Acra’ is the sounds and feelings of that faux Honeymoon – the title track itself is a response to Jessica Pratt’s album ‘Quiet Signs’ which my fiancé played for me for the first time on this trip. I recorded the songs at home while we were quarantining – you can hear my fiancé quietly in the background on some tracks as she opens and closes cupboards or walks around – artifacts of our lives in quarantine. The hiss on the tracks, the scratches on the guitar and various room noises were left in to keep the intimacy of the place and time in my life.’\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRostami takes time and leaves a lot of space on most songs which are departures from his rich electronic productions. The music playing is strangely familiar, dotted with blurry vocalisations and whispered musings. We join this character on a journey that blurs linear time, reality, and fiction, and bear witness to the\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e delivery of a message that is trying to reach us all.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThroughout the film, we are enveloped by the eerie and abstract sounds of O’Neill’s music, composed using field recordings, tape loops, and organ. The sounds were made over a 6-month period of isolation using only items from the artist’s home, her surroundings within her travel restrictions, and the equipment at hand.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe compositions are influenced by William Basinski, Grouper, Brian Eno, and nature itself, ‘Talking with Leaves’ was made by crunching leaves in the artist’s hand and recording with a contact mic. The track ‘Seaside Nightdream’ opens like a flower with swirling, shoegaze guitar, tape echo, and windy reverb. The closing track ‘Evening Blue’ is reminiscent of the heady emotion of Nico and closes the project with a strong message - we must listen to our own voice, and the voice of nature.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBeautifully mastered to retain its analogue textures, by John Hannon of Southend’s No recording studio, this immersive piece is best experienced alone, if possible, and listened to with headphones.
