Edition of 60 copies.

84100 is the result of the collaboration between Savvas Metaxas and Renato Grieco. The two of them met on the island of Syros, during the 2018 Syros Sounding Paths Residency. During their stay there the artists had to pursuit and investigate one or more ideas.

Metaxas’ focus was mainly around the story and the sounds of the industrial ghost-past of Ermoupolis, while Grieco’s interest was the in the tape, not just as a format but more as a material and dare to say as a somehow living creature.

While each one was working on his own ideas, they found the time and space to improvise together and connect this two ongoing sound searches. The recordings of these sessions, and that of a live performance the duo gave during the closing of the residency, were collected edited and mixed by Renato Grieco back in his Naples studio, and the outcome is 84100 that stands for Ano Syros Postal Code.

However, the way of perceiving and understanding a landscape and the possible expression of feelings towards it is also influenced by a number of other factors, among which the environmental conditions play a key role. Taking into account the influence of environmental conditions on the sound and not only the perception of a landscape, we tried to revisit familiar urban landscapes after rainfall in an attempt to observe the change of the sensory framework that took place due to the rain and what this implies (absence of sun , blurry colors, wet surfaces, etc.). The visual identity of familiar landscapes was gradually changing. After several visits we tried to capture these transitions musically by orchestrating compositions for imaginary landscapes, without being there creating the ideal soundtrack for the places which were now\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e imprinted in our minds. Recently, I’ve been reflecting a lot about cells’ lifespan, and how they originate, evolve, transform and eventually die. One of my best friends was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer months ago. From our perspective, cancer is such a bad thing but life, for sure, is not anthropocentric. It seems to follow its own path, mostly out of our control. Today, thanks to recent studies of epigenetics, we discovered that the environment can alter our DNA. Love can change our DNA, as well as sound. I think of my sound fragments as undifferentiated (or partially differentiated) cells, like stem cells, whose fate is controlled by complex intracellular molecular regulatory networks. I embraced this perspective as a compositional method: proximity, relation, distribution, and interaction determine the behaviour of the sounds like in a biological system. Life is a network, we could simply not exist without plants, fungi and ultimately other humans. Sound offers an extraordinary framework within which to build an intricate system of collisions, overlappings, and movements. It is a way of staying within the complexity permeating our lives. And as life continuously changes, my sound fragments transform, adapting to new contexts, needs, and listeners’ sensitivities. Sounds, like cells, exist as a biological process. We exist as a process. I think of my sound fragments as undifferentiated (or partially differentiated) cells, like stem cells, whose fate is controlled by complex intracellular molecular regulatory networks. I embraced this perspective as a compositional method: proximity, relation, distribution, and interaction determine the behaviour of the sounds like in a biological system. Life is a network, we could simply not exist without plants, fungi and ultimately other humans. Sound offers an extraordinary framework within which to build an intricate system of collisions, overlappings, and movements. It is a way of staying within the complexity permeating our lives. And as life continuously changes, my sound fragments transform, adapting to new contexts, needs, and listeners’ sensitivities. Sounds, like cells, exist as a biological process. We exist as a process.
